So I just hit the liquor store and came back with 11.2oz of Chimay Ale ($3.39). Everyone raves about how good it is. Perhaps I'm just biased now as a large fan of stouts but I don't think I really care for it. Its a unique flavor and very smooth but I can't help but be reminded of raw bread dough. Does the layer of yeast in the bottom of the bottle just make me think this or do others think its a little odd too? :D

What color was the label? I have only had the Grande Reserve (blue label). I believe it's just as much as an aquired taste as a good stout.

Yup thats the one, it did get better as I drank it although many many people I know rank it or duvel as their favorite beers. I haven't tried duvel yet but so far I'm sticking with sam smith's oatmeal stout as one of the best. Different beer for different people though :D

I've found that Belgian beers are a special "acquired taste" all their own. I haven't found a belgian ale that beats a boulevard pale ale.

where do you live?

Our grocery stores here sell no alcohol at all, I got it at a liquor store. I was lucky to find a liquor store with it even though. Our town has quite the reputation as being a drunk college town so its easy finding cheap nasty beer, but better stuff takes more work. I actually went out tonight looking for some guinness stout but between two stores didn't find it.

I just tried newcastle brown too btw.....'eh pretty bland overall. I could see it as a session beer I guess but I was hoping for a little more flavor for it.

broon: I could see that I think. This was my first belgian I do believe. I will keep my eye on them and probably try a few more over time but it wasn't love at first sip like with stouts :D
