now.. if I have a beer or two... then hit the hard stuff... no prob. If I get drunk off beer, then drink liqour... I am HURTING the next day.

I assume it's some sort of dehydration thing... but technically why does this happen?

Because it makes the rhyme work, as well as it's corollary "liquor before beer and you're in the clear"

Beer before liquor, never been Sicker.
Liquor before beer, you're in the Clear.

I never mix n match. I'll either drink beer all night or have some rum and cokes and things like that.

No, remaining properly hydrated and not drinking so much you have alcohol poisoning keeps you from having a hangover. Those chaser pills you see on late night T.V. are gimmicks, they don't work. Just drink a liter(or more) of water before you go to bed, and maybe take a tylenol or other pain medication.

I first heard it as
"Beer before hard, you're in the yard
Hard before beer, you're in the clear"

And yes, it does actually seem to have a kernel of truth to it. But no, I don't know why. Someone oughta send it in to snopes.

version 1 = liqour before beer makes you a dead deer.

version 2 = beer before liquor makes you sicker.

so which one is true?

Its because of the yeast in beer affects the liquor digestion. I'm not sure of the scientific stuff but thats just what I have heard.

It should just be, if it's 1:45am and you're doing tekillya shots, you're going to be hurting tomorrow.

#1 is wrong. Don't get drunk on beer and then start on the hard liquor.

i always thought it was because of the amount you end up drinking through each methond:

1. beer before liquor
the beer, you don't feel the effects/buzz as fast so you drink 3, 4, 5 and then start hitting the liquor, say...3-5 shots, because you don't think you're buzzed or not feeling it. so now you've got an accumulated (up to) 5 beers and 5 shots.

2. liquor before beer
you take your 3-5 shots first and almost immediately so you think "hmm, i'm getting kinda dizzy/buzzed already" and then take maybe 1 or 2 more beers to maintain it. in this scenario your total amount taken in is 5 shots, 2 beers.

(numbers theoretical, vary with how much it takes you to start feeling the effects).

hmmm, might have to experiement (in the name of science of course  )

...Water good Idea
...Tylenol BAD IDEA. DO NOT MIX TYLENOL WITH BEER OR LIQUOR. THIS IS VERY BAD.
here's a few links from a quick google search. There are thousands of others.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER take tylenol after drinking. That is one of the worst things you can possibly do to your liver.

Its a farce.

Just learn how to handle your liquor.

although having loads of beer and then a couple tequilla shots always seems to hurt.

The only thing that makes sense is liquor goes into your bloodstream much faster, so if you're already pretty buzzed you might not be able to gauge yourself very well.

me neither. we always drink beer and shots all night. i think everyone's system is different and you have to learn what you can and can't handle.

True about drinking plenty of water.

Alcohol is a diuretic. Which means it makes your kidneys produce more urine and so it makes you dehydrated. That's probably why you get hungover the next day, it's the aftereffects of being dehyrdated all night.

And just noticed this too...

DO NOT MIX TYLENOL AND ALCOHOL! IT COULD KILL YOU!
