hello friends, i need some help; i have put a system together; (new) the system was working fine until today. i was putting in a sound card., when i put the card in, the system began to beep. so i took the sound card out. to make along story short i'm getting 8 beeps together. the board has an AMI bios chip. it was working fine before i tried the sound card. the card is not a namebrand sound card i can't get any video, i lost it once but i got it back, i looked on AMI website they said that 8 beeps is disply memory read/write failure how do i correct this problem, i tried another video card that is identical to the first one.
when the system boots i get 2 beeps pause then the 8 beeps then 2 beeps then one final beep. what do i need to do, how do ifix this problem.

please help !!!!:)

ps the motherboard is a PC CHIPS 400/ 930 LDR ; this is a good board i hope i have not ruined it. thanks in advance.

Have you tried resetting the bios via the motherboard jumpers?

*edit*--what slot are you attemping to install the sound card into?

THANKS MR. NALE, I PUT THE SOUND CARD IN PCI SLOT # 1 THE FIRST TIME, THEN # 2 THE SECOND TIME ALSO THIS BOARD HAS SOUND ON THE BOARD CODEC 97 I HAD FORGTTON ABOUT THAT I SHOULD HAVE GONE INTO THE BIOS FIRST DISABLED THAT FIRST. I WENT ON ( FORGIVE ME I'M NOT SHOUTING ) forgot to release the cap. key; as i was saying i went on AMI's web sight and looked up the beep codes the 8 beeps means display memory read/write failure. i did did try to clear the bios using the jumper i did do it wrong i did not disconnect the power supply cable on the motherboard, but it does boot i took the video card out and it still beeps i'm going to try and clear the bios again also i'm going to call AMI to day they are right in my back yard so to speak, i live here in riverdale , ga. they are about 25 miles from my house they're norcross,ga. thanks again

in the BIOS did you Disable the onboard sound and also take your memory out(might want to do it with all your add-in cards as well) and wipe the contacts with newspaper( yeah ..I know WTF? ..but it sometimes works...lol ) then reinsert your memory( one stick at a time between reboots... if more than one stick one might be causing trouble ) and try again. <edit>"DirectSound AC97 Codec on board, for Audio and Modem applications. "<-----not good disabling onboard sound better check modem operation after adding in sound card

Ahh, I take it you're using an AGP for your video? If you can help it, don't put anything in PCI slot #1, it interferes with AGP slot. I usually try and put my sound card down at slot 5 or 6...hopefully you haven't screwed your video up, have you another to test/replace it with?

hello mr. scrap thanks for the info i just tried to clear the cmos and removed the memory and i still get the eight beeps i don't know what i could have done to it, seems like nothing works. i'm going back and hook the monitor up to it and see what happens. what is the worst thing that can happen or could been causing the video to not function anymore. thanks paul.

At the risk of stating the obvious, make sure you didn't dislodge your video card. If it's not securely in the socket, you'll get the beep codes. Good luck!

That's solid advice. If I recall correctly, Peter said that the PC Chips is ECS and 1 of the most prevalent issues with the K7S5A is getting that error code because despite firmly inserting the AGP card it still wasn't seated well. Sometimes you have to reseat it 6-8 times to get it to post. It's where I would start....

Same as if it's not seated properly, keep reseating it and trying to boot in between each attempt.
