As some of you know, I've put my heart and soul into the business in my signature the past 3 years (short of 3 full years by 3 months) and was nominated for an Entrepreneurship Competition. 2 years ago, I was awarded a scholarship for my efforts by the NFIB/Visa, and they placed a nomination in for me.
There are 8 of us competing in this regional competition and we're given a 30 minute time slot. I don't know the exact number of judges, but it's going to be close to 15 judges.
I don't know what I'm up against in terms of others who will be there, but just getting opportunities like this means a lot to me. I'm not posting this here for attention, but rather to thank everyone who has encouraged me and helped me out, these forums have been an incredible resource for me, and the people I've met are invaluable.
I'll be given a time slot some time today between noon and 5PM, not sure yet when it will be, but I'll probably get on at some point letting you guys know how it went. I'm off to Kinkos to print out the final report to hand out to the judges
RossMAN - you are the person who got me into all of this, so thank you for what you've done.
AT - Thanks to all the members who have supported me these past 3 years. In such a saturated market, I've found my niche and been able to make it work despite the competition in this market. I don't want to list people besides Ross just because I know I'll miss some of you.
Update:
Just got back, each way was ~325 miles, ended up being around 800 including everything.
For those who want cliffs: I came in third, got a cash prize, and one of those clear awards that stands on a desk or whatever with their name, my rank, etc. engraved.
This was held at Mercedes Benz's financial HQ in Farmington Hills, MI.
We came in, had lunch, and were given the order of presentations. I was first, and it didn't actually bother me at all, I went up, and gave my presentation, finishing just on time and had probably the longest Q/A session of anyone else. The person in charge of Media Relations came up to me as I was going back to my seat, complimented me, gave me his business card, and was later told to get in touch with him.
I'm a bit tired and so I'll just give you guys a brief overview of the people that placed ahead of me. Do note that it was under confidentiality agreements and so I can't say too much:
1. This was a lady that just graduated from college and has opened up a retail business in a market that has been sitting around untapped for some reason, and is planning to expand very fast.
2. The second place winner is 19 years old and has a business well into the *millions* of dollars per year of revenue.
3. Your's truly
The judges were entrepreneurs local to the area and I got tons of advice, business cards, offers to help, book recommendations, etc. Just being there alone was another networking event, and I probably have a bit more business coming up thanks to it.
Overall, it was a great experience, and I hope to be a bit more competitive next year.
Update 2: I've got an article coming up in Purdue's newspaper on Friday
