been working on finding the max stable setup for my brand new mobile 2600+ rig!

first of all heres my setup:

mobile xp 2600+ with thermalright sp97 and 92 mm fan that pushes 60-64 cfm
artic silver 5
mushkin pc3500 level one black (2x512) @ 11-3-3-2
abit nf7-s rev 2
antec trueblue 480
gainward ti4200 128ddr @ 305 core and 586 mem (only thing i havent upgraded yet)

so now for my results. at first, before i got the mushkin ram, i was running at 2505 (12.5x200) @ 1.85 with cpu/dram timing at 6/5 so the pc2700 memory i had at the time was running at the default ddr333 speed. at this setting, i was prime stable and temps were around 46-48, depending on room temperature and case temperature

now the first wierd issue: after i got the mushkin, my video card suddenly wont overclock as high as i had it before i got the ram. before i got the mushkin, i had it at 311/597 (with artic silver thermal adhesive), now after i got the ram, it wont do 311/597 without locking up and giving me artifacts. the only thing that has changed is the memory and the case. the memory now runs at 400ddr instead of 333ddr. the case was an old HP case and it is now in a slightly smaller antec super lanboy case.

at first i thought case cooling was the issue, since case temps were higher with the lanboy case than with the HP case, but i have defeated that conjecture with a new case fan, which is a delta 120x120x38 that pushes 108 cfm @ 42 db and it totally dropped the case temps at the cost of an annoying fan buzz. anyways, vid card still wont run at the previous higher speed, but honestly, i dont really care for a few mhz and i just pointed all this out to let you guys in on my weird observation/experience.

now for the more important issues i have. first of all, how high is this ram supposed to be able to overclock to? how tight can my timings be run? and most importantly, why CANT i run stably at any fsb above 200??? i tried running 2484 (11.5x216) which utilizes the STOCK memory speed. i've read people had problems with the nf7-s rev2 board going above 200 mhz and now i am a firm believer. i've tried playing around with the memory and chipset voltages with no luck, either raising them or dropping them with the same results. i just cant seem to run stably for very long at anything above 200 mhz fsb.

oh, and to make things weirder, i've done the L12 mod too! at first i did it with some my silver circuit writer pen, but no changes were observed so i thought i must have had a bad connection. then i did the wire in the socket trick to confirm a better connection but still no changes observed! still boots at default of 600 mhz (100x6) and still wont get me any fsb speeds above 200mhz. i am lost at this point and would love some guidance and suggestions. oh one last thing i'd like to mention is that i've changed the crappy thermal grease from the stock northbridge cooler with some artic silver 5.

thanks for your inputs OC gurus!

Taking advice myself of the more experienced overclockers, I tried lowering the multiplier real low around 8 I believe and played with the FSB until it was stable in prime 95 for any amount of time. Then jumped up the multi to catch up, I didn't want to way overvolt, so I am trying to get it stable with the mid volt setting.

My Setup is almost exactly like yours, except memory and video card.

nf7-s, xp 2600, sp-97 w/92mm fan, AS5
Pc-3500 (bh5 chips)
9700 pro, ps. 450 watt

Also cpu setting in bios is optimal, not enabled, enabled crashes like crazy!

I run right now @ 215 fsb, 11.5 multi, 1.74 core voltage..run around 41 or so messing on net and 48 under load. My experience has been crazy as well, and very unpredictable, running these bh5 chips they should go crazy, but I think the boards holding me back.

thanks for the reply sammie, but as of now, my max OC is 200X12.5 ANYTHING over 200, even 202x12 isnt stable. as for the cpu interface setting, i read here that
CPU Interface

CPU Interface should be set to enabled as noted in the bios section. CPU Interface disabled will generally give you a higher front side bus overclock at the expense of performance. An estimate of 15 to 20 more fsb is needed to compensate for memory performance with CPU Interface disabled.

so i've kept that as enabled. and yes, i've tried it at disabled as well, but it failed prime after 1 hour and 55 min

as for temps, my case is avg 24c and my cpu on avg 43c per MBM under full prime95 load's maximum power consumption torture test

seems like you've got a better chip than me. my stepping is IQYHA too, but it takes me 1.85v to run 2.5 ghz stably. whats your stepping?

EDIT added quote from the site for the lazy readers

Well maybe I'll try it enable and drop the fsb a bit.

Good luck, I believe the stepping is the same as yours.

If you haven't already, go look around over here nForcersHQ for the NF7

Lot of people over there have no prob's with FSB over 200. As for me, my cpu is holding me back

I've read elsewhere the the cpu interface has to do with using ram command rate of 1T (enabled) or 2T (disabled). The abit verbiage on this is completely unhelpful...

last nite before i slept, i changed two things before i ran prime95:

1. changed my cpu/dram ratio to 3/3 (i tried 6/6, 5/5, and 4/4 already)

2. more importantly, i changed PRIME95 ITSELF!!!!

for the first time last nite, i ran into the "pagefile bug", or at least i THOT it was the first time i've run into that damn error! i've been testing my rig for weeks with this damn program!! i was at version 23.8 and i've reverted to version 22.13 since last nite. and viola! prime has been running for nine and a half hours with this version and its still running, NO ERRORS! @ 2484 (216x11.5) @1.85 :|

although one thing worth mentioning between the two programs is the absence of the different selection of tests. the newer version has the "small fft, in place large fft, and blend" test choices for torturing while this older version only has "torture test" as the only option. i notice this sole torture test option to be similar to the "blend" test option of the newer one, because there are times where my cpu isnt at max usage because it is testing my ram.

now is time to bump it up at notch from 11.5 to 12 with my newly found higher FSB!
