Hmmm.....I won't get too much into the details at the moment, but my friend and I have been thinking of setting up an online hosting thing. It basically started off of the idea of offering webspace at teencribs.com, but then we decided to expand to hosting in general. But yeah. How many here would be willing to pay $6 a month for a basic webhosting plan consisting of:

50 megs space | 3 gigs transfer | Php, mysql, asp, ftp all of that standard bull crap | OC-48 backbone

We aren't sure yet as to the CPU, but it won't be a CPU from 5 years ago or anythin like that. Something relatively new

So just going off of that...what do u guys think?

Oh yeah, we would also allow adult hosting on any of the plans...incase anybody is looking for that

I'm just looking for advice. My other friend already has a webhosting thing and I know he would be willing to help out with the beginning (how to do things and such) to get
me more aquainted. So yeah....comments?

Yeah.. way too many of them out there. I think there's someone else in the Hotdeals section advertising the $3.99/month for similar setup as yours.

here's the thread i am talking about $3.95/month hosting...

looks like he has you beat on every front.. very competitive business if you ask me.

develop a sound business plan and do projections based on data. If you do this right, you can succeed and be profitable, but I'm telling you that the industry margin is not too high and the competition is fierce. You'll have to pursue a niche strategy to remain viable/solvent and that means higher margin but also means added value.

Cheers ! :)

$6 for that is actually a very competitive rate..I am sure you could get clients offering that.

I've been thinking....$45, MAYBE 50 1.5 gigs of space, 30-40 gigs transfer, ASP, PHP, SSH access, ftp, etc....and yeah....how does that seem?

oh, and it's a dual oc-48 backbone

First of all forgive me for being nitpicky, but being a fellow administrator and host myself i'd like to point these things out:

"all of that standard bull crap"
"online hosting thing"
"webhosting thing"

Even though you're still starting out you have to have the right attitude to begin with. If i were a potential client and saw your thread right now i'd go thinking "Does this guy even know what he's doing? Why should i give him my money to host my site?", "Standard bull crap? Will he be saying i'm a standard bull crap client too, especially when i start asking for some help?"

Anyway, nitpicking aside. I'd rather you go for the higher priced plans with more in store for the client. These bargain basement hosting plans are a lot more saturated and unless you'll be getting a lot of clients and multiple servers to host those clients you're never going to be happy with such a small profit margin.

Btw, you might also want to try finding a real server or colocation facility if you do go that route. Freeservers.com for DNS and Northsky for the services isn't going to get you far especially the way Northsky charges you're better off getting your own dedicated server.

My 2c :)

Raq 4 is good! Having a web config utility is always good not only for you as the administrator but for the client who wishes to have more control over their account as well.

Make sure you get a decent amount of ram.

My current server (main) is still run on the same hardware i had 2 years ago. A Celeron 500, 312mb RAM, 15GB 7200rpm IDE drive. It pumps out roughly 9gb of data/mo, there's been two consecutive months it pumped out 50GB/mo. Average CPU utilization is in the teens %-wise. Hosting roughly 110 sites to date.

I think 512 will do...don't u? :)

For $325 a month, doesn't the following seem good? (and no setup fee....monthly discount and nos etup fee courtesy of being friends with the host :)) (and this is almost as the guy sent me...just edited out a few things)

Cobalt RaQ4
512MB RAM
30 GB Hard Drive
300-450Mhz Processor
325GigaBytes per month.
I'll give you 5 IP's and you can request more at any time for $2ea.
FREE DNS
NO setup Fee.
$325/mo They are $400/mo on my site.
You OWN it after 24 months - just cause I said so - the Ovi special. This
server costs $2000 from sun.
No long term contracts, month to month. Pay 24 consecutive months and you
own the server outright. simple.

So I think I am getting a good deal, considering the server is also on a dual oc-48...don't u? COmments?

alright. well, i bought the package today. it's a cobalt raq 4 with 512 ram hosted on a DUAL OC-48 line (that's 5.4gigs per second!!)

my host hasn't had to reboot their site in 144 days and they are on the same kind of server, so the uptime is really good.

anyways, if you are interested in more information then please PM me or reply here

I will have a pingable IP up for you guys within the next day or so

thanks :)
