Been thinking about this writers strike

First all do they get paid while on strike?

If the problem takes too long to resolve then people will just find other alternatives to their entertainment, whether it's another show, a Netflix subscription, or not watch TV shows anymore like me.

So the writers will be the hit.

Are any of you guys already started watching other shows? meaning ones that they normally wouldn't watch.
I find myself watching more Family Guy, Simpsons, and SportCenter, which isn't too bad.

Sorry, it isn't really an exciting thread but I am bored at work.

The studios will get hit harder than the writers will. No the writers will not be paid during this strike period.

doubt the studios will get hit that hard. they will switch to "real tv". get ready for a bunch of survivor ripoffs.

the writers still get paid for stuff that they did in the past. the ones really getting hurt are the lower people. light operators, camermen, etc

Get used to watching the same ones over and over again since those shows require writers as well.

Yeah I know, I am catching up tho. I think there is enough episodes to get me thru a Michigan winter.

Yep, those are the ones hurting. The writers are probably loaded as is (no source, just what I've been led to believe). The "working people" are getting laid off and have to find new jobs in an increasingly job-less market.

While the writers have the right to ask for "fair" compensation for internet/DVD stuff, the only thing I see now is that the greedier won't give the greedy what they want.

Edit: Addition

Actually, I read somewhere that because those cartoons take so long to make, they make them WELL in advance. Thus, the Simpsons (maybe others) should have a full season.

From what I've read, nytimes (can't find link), the writers are average people with not amazing pay. The studios do get hurt since they lose viewers. I think the writers strike of 1988 was for 6 months and 10% of viewers stopped watching tv and it hasn't recovered since. The viewers will probably not drop as fast due to reality tv, but they will also lose interest if it lasts long enough. It's also not just TV, it's also movies (I think).

Last I heard the negotiations were at a stand still because the AMPTP basically said they won't negotiate anymore unless the writer's guild removed a bunch of its demands.

In general, the writer's guild wants increased "residuals" on DVDs and any sort of "residuals" on internet distribution. Over the past dozen or so years, writer's pay has gone down as more people watch on DVD and other forms. The amount they get paid for DVDs is really tiny compared to what they get paid for reruns and such. They don't really get paid at all for internet distribution right now, despite the fact that the studios put lots of advertising in their online videos.

There's a lot of speculation about what's going to happen because the strike is now cutting into the production of new tv shows for next season. Some people are going so far as to predict that if the strike goes on for much longer, the traditional concept of seasons will have to change. Not sure why... but it would be cool if all the networks kept good content going throughout the year like FX / Hotime / HBO do.

The writer's strike really hasn't impacted me much, but I have enjoyed ONE benefit of it...Some of the re-runs of Leno and Letterman have been GREAT...much better than most of their recent offerings...

Writers get paid squat in relation to the actors and the studios. They want more $$$, and I can't blame them.

They're gonna price themselves right out of the market faster than a Quizno's. Like I needed another reason to do something other than watch TV!
