Been out of the video card loop

I am looking to upgrade my 7900GT soon to get ready for Crysis,UT3 and GoW(hopefully next month). Whats a good guesstimate as to when a $200 card comes that will be quite a bit faster than a 7900GT with DX10?

You are in luck. Nvidia are due to release a new cards at the end of October and Ati in the middle of November that will blow the current cards away in the $200-$250 range and should play those games great.

My advice: Wait until those games are released before buying said hardware.

Seconded.

Although good advice it ain't gonna matter much when I am on a fixed price that I'll spend on upgrading. Either the $200ish cards will have to do or I am out of luck.

Yep, not only wait until the game you really want to play is released, but check for a card that is bundled with one of those titles. Should be at least 1 8800GT or 2950 Pro (which will be much faster OCed) that comes with either Crysis or UT3.

If your not comfortable OCing yourself, look for a factory OCed card, a lot of them might be $20 more (once prices settle) but tend to come bundled with bigger game titles sometimes.

Nope, the waiting isnt just about the performance of these two cards in those titles. It is about how they compare to other cards like the 2900Pro/XT and the current style 8800GTS and where those cards will end up price wise as well. The release of the new mid range plus the release of new high end results in previous high end cards also dropping and some of those may well end up in the $200 range during a inventory clearance sale somewhere.

Yeah I wouldn't be out of luck but I hate waiting 😀. Of course thats a good idea on wait for a bundle although usually only the high end $300+ cards get bundled with newer games.
