I had a 1ghz amd and a msi board. I think I just fried them so I guess it's time for an unexpected upgrade. I want to keep this under 200 so what should I get as far as a board/cpu go? I don't want to bother with overclocking either cuz I remember having a hard time unlocking my amd, putting that artic silver stuff on, and trying not to crack the core when putting the heatsink on..what a pain. I think my cpu is just fried so if I can't get a good mobo/cpu combo for under 200 I guess I can just upgrade the CPU and plop it in this msi board. It's a k7tpro2 (can those new xp athlons go in this?)

Umm, take a whiff....if it's not burnt smelling, take the heatsink off and see if the CPU is really fried or not. If something strange happened, and your system just won't work, something's prolly busted. Since your components are around 9-15 months old, you may have a warranty (may).

i took the heatsink off the cpu i can't tell if it's fried or not. What happened was..my computer wouldn't boot up..it would just hang in dos - and if i'd leave my computer off for a long time it would get even further in the bootup - so i figured my heatsink just came off my cpu a bit and it was overheating - so i just pressed on the heatsink to give it a more firm placement on the cpu and now it just won't boot up at all (nothing on screen)...so I'm thinking I cracked the core ....
