Been out of the IDE world a while, how do you know if all the ATA-100 stuff is working?

I have a Maxtor 7200RPM ATA-100.

My question is, what is the normal clues that everything is as it should be?

In harware properties (Win 98) it says "VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller" and under drives it says "Generic Type 47".

I have the KT133a chipset on my IWill KK266 with the latest 4in1 drivers. I also turned on UDMA in the driver during the install. Is everything optimal? Thanks.

You cannot tell from the Dev. Mgr. if you are running ATA-100. Use a benchmark program like HD Tach and make note of your scores. The search the forums for people that have posted their results.

* note, HD Tach usually reports a 50 ~ 80MB read burst with an ATA-100 hdd.

I would run sandra benchmark and hdtach and try to be in the range of 20000 plus on sandra and about 27-30 plus mb/sec on sustained transfers, 13 or less ms for seek, and around 70 plus mb/sec burst...Seems about average for most I have seen.

The real stink is most ata100 drives get nowhere close to the claimed 100mb/sec transfer rates let alone ata66's 66mb/sec...Oh well...

You get more real time performance out of the 7200 rpms versus older 5400rpms....
