Looking to upgrade my xp 2100 system pretty soon, I think I'm going to go up to a p4 when the prices on the 3ghz start to come down.

I have seen that via, sis, and intel all have various chipsets available for p4. What is a good one to get and what motherboard is best?

I want to keep the mobo cost around 100 bucks give or take a little bit.. cheaper is fine as long as its good performance/stable

thanks, i'll check newegg and see what brands use that chipset.

are the offerings from via and sis any good?

are most of the newer p4 chipsets dual channel ddr?

the i865 and i875 are 800MHz FSB mobos
if i am correct via and sis have not launched their range of 800MHz chipsets

For around $100, you'll probably be able to get a 865PE motherboard when it comes out in large volumes next month. Right now, the 845PE is the best chipset for motherboards around $100.

You can buy an 865PE right now for ~ $100.

If I were buying a CPU that expensive I would bump down a speed grade and use the money to get a good i875p (when they're available) with good ddr400 RAM instead, it would probably be about the same speed and you'd be in a better position to upgrade to a fast prescott later on too.

Yeah, 865PE/875P are the ones to get now if you want DC DDR. If you want SC DDR, the 845PE gets the nod.
oldie pretty much nailed it. Get an i875 board, if it's in your budget.
