Been out for a few months...

Hey guys,

The last time I was active around these forums was back in about September, when I completed my rig. However, after this, my interest in keeping up with hardware has dwindled, and as a result, I am clueless as to what has happened bewteen then and now.

For example, whatever happened to socket M2?

So could someone inform me about what happened? New GPU'S? New cores/CPU's? New chipsets? etc, etc.

I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Very quick summary:

M2 is now AM2, and it is still scheduled for Q2 2006, doesn't look exciting from the info I have seen so far.

nVidea came out with the 7900 series.

ATI came out with x1900 series

RAM got much cheaper.

And the biggest news: Intel let Anandtech test their new Processor core "Conroe," and it beat the overclocked AMD FX60 by a large margin in all the benchmarks, even though it was clocked 200Mhz lower... This is what everyone is so excited about right now.

Things are largely the same on the desktop and server front. AMD is untouchable on price/performance.
In laptops Intel has the performance edge and AMD has the price edge.

In another 6 months, things may get exciting. Intel will come out with a new desktop chip (conroe) which may blow away current AMD desktop chips. AMD may have a new 65nm chip which may also blow away current desktop chips.

All right, well what about heatsinks, cases, PSU's etc? Anything new in that department?

Intel had some kind of self-contained watercooling thing that looked promising, wondering where that's at

Er, socket A just got new, er, optimizations and everyone's giving away their 3700+'s and 7800GTs for 2600+ mobiles and 9800 pros. I'll trade, though I might need some money to compensate for the lost performance >_>

You didn't miss anything yet, but I'm assuming in 4-6 months there will be a lot of rigs in the FS/FT forum and I can guarantee you I'll be there 😉
