Been on atkins for a few months now

So I've done atkins before, lost some weight. Worked well enough at the time but a few months ago I entered a contest at work to lose the most weight. Everyone in the contest chips in $20 and winner takes all. With 40 people in it, the pot is decent.

So far in 3 months or so I've lost about 55 pounds. Down from 240 to 185. I think I'm in the lead but I'll find out in a week when I am scheduled for my weigh out.

However, tonight I had a HUGE carb craving.

I have been good on my deit so far, but this craving I really needed to satisfy tonight for some odd reason, but I also didn't want to break my diet. So what do I do? I end up buying a box of atkins "carb free" bars. Well almost carb free. 5 come in a box with 1g of sugar and 22g of "dietary fiber."

I literally haven't eating anything all day or much for the last 2 days because of this diet and being on the home stretch towards winning this thing. So do I just open one and be content?

NO WAY!! I devour the whole box! All 5 bars. Damn they tasted good too. However...

Word of advice to anyone thinking of doing anything as insane as this.

DONT!!!!!!!!

If you want to go through rolls and rolls of toilet paper a few hours later and barely be able to spend 5 minutes typing a short message board post out, I seriously advise against giving into carb cravings of atkin bars. I think I've let loose enough to fill the bowl up 6 times over in the last half hour easy. It's bad.

So, morale of the story, stay away from "carb free" sugar substitute bars if you are on a carb craving binge. I'm sure 1 or maybe 2 might not cause this effect I'm having, but when you hit 5 or more bars... be ready for a long night staring at your bathroom floor.

I hope you drank a lot of water before the weigh in :)

Drink a lot of alcohol a day before the weigh out

Isn't atkins really dangerous for your body? I prefer just reasonable balanced food plus good exercise

Sounds like you gorged on fiber bars. Regardless of diet, no one should eat more than one of those things.

Atkins is a fairly dangerous "diet". You're tricking your body into a mode of starvation so that your body will use its fat stores for energy...you eat all of the protein to ensure you're not losing any muscle that you've built.

I looked at it as an option when I finally decided that being 400 lbs was too much, but I read that I'd get more results from eating 6-8 small meals a day, cutting out simple carbs, and exercising.

I'm not going to dog anybody who's wanting to lose weight though. If it works for the person, more power to them! If a guy like myself who was a lazyass for most of his life can go from 400 lbs to 197...ANYBODY can do it. :) Keep up the great work HumblePie!

I just started this one today:

http://www.anthonycatanzaro.com/dietplans.html

It's basically a 7-deal rotating menu with 6 meals a day. Rather than a short-term diet, it's a health eating plan. He is the only personal trainer I've found who promotes healthy eating without supplements. The meals are easy to make and look pretty good. See ya in 6 weeks ;)

Yeah, I did the Atkins thing too. It works really well really quickly, but the lack of carbs wrecks havac with the ol' pooper. I'd recommend the diet (actually, the South Beach diet is similar, but it just gets rid of processed carbs instead of natural carbs) if you need to drop weight fast.

The most common replacement for carbs is fat.
The most common replacement for fat is carbs.

You are basically consuming pure 10W30 when you are eating those tasty carb free foods.

It's a lot less dangerous than being severely overweight. Really, all the diet is telling you to do is drop simple carbs. There is still portion control and exercise involved. You better read up on it before you start spouting off facts:

ANY sugar substitute candy or bar will do that to you if you eat too much.

They use sorbitol, maltitol or xylitol as a sugar. These are sugar alcohols that are indigestible (thus are not absorbed) and break down in the colon, making a LOT of gas. They also draw fluids into the colon when they break down causing diarrhea.

Kinda funny how no one here knows this.

I know this because me and my brother ate a whole package of sugar free cookies his business partner had one day. After we were done, the partner found out and laughed at us. We couldn't figure out why until later that day. :(

EDIT: Just looked at the Atkins bars and they do not appear to use sugar alcohols.

But they have a sh!tload of insoluble fiber. Same effect.

Yah pretty much, I was up very late last night and I'm heading into work right now with a very RAW seat. Every little normal thing I did this morning such as showering, putting on clothes, and sitting down to put on shoes was a chore this morning because of it. BrokenVisage, pooping is normally a good thing, but everything in moderation. When you overdo anything, it becomes a bad thing mmmkay. I had been doing great though because the atkins diet can cause problems with your normal pooping cycle but for the last 3 months I haven't had any major swings into constipation or diarrhea.

Those knocking atkins, it is the fastest way through dieting alone to lose fat weight. I've done it before and until yesterday had kept the carb craving down to a minimum by avoiding caffine and other products which trigger a carb crave. I had no idea why but last night it just snuck up on me and I wanted carbs badly.

Also, some atkin bars do use the sugar alcohols and some don't. Just depends on which flavor you purchase. Most are just "sh!tload" insoluble fiber though. Perfect word usage there Amused.

On the bright side I think I lost almost 5 pounds of whatever was in me. Feels like it at least.
