Been having really bad chest pains...

Just a lot of general tightness in my chest area. I'm 20, so I'm pretty sure I'm not in the midst of a heart attack. I'd guess that its stress-related, but I haven't actually been subjected to much stress at all lately - I've been more relaxed in the past 4 weeks than I have in the previous year. All the same, its definitely been there for a few days now, and its started interfering with my sleep - hence why I'm posting at 4 AM.

Anyone ever get anything like this before? Ideas on what it might be?

Dont discount a heart attack. Could be a genetic defect or something unrelated to age. Chest problems are not something to fsck around with. But if it goes away dont worry about it.

I'd get in to the doc right away...(make appointment as soon as you can). Could be a number of things. Anxiety attacks?

I know anxiety attacks are along the same lines - but I really have no reason to be anxious right now. It would have made more sense if I had this happening a month or two ago.

I guess I'll stop by the health center on campus tomorrow and see if they're open.

If they are bad enough to have you say "really bad" and they are keeping you up, the doc is the best idea.

I don't know if heart murmurs are painful, or irregular heart beats can cause pain.

I just noticed the ads appearing at the bottom of this thread.

That's really depressing. 😛

If the pain is radiating to your jaw and/or left arm, get it checked out because you may be having a heart attack. If not, it could be a bajillion things, from the more serious (angina) to less serious (you're a pansy 😉).

If you are having chest pains then you need to go ahead and get it checked out like others have suggested. Young people can have heart problems too.

how come you're not going to see a doctor?

From may clinic:

"When to seek medical advice

Pain in your chest can be severe. It can be difficult to interpret. The cause of the pain could be something as simple as heartburn or as serious as a heart attack.

If you experience unexplained and persistent chest pain or a feeling of pressure or tightness in your chest ? particularly if it's accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness or pain that radiates beyond your chest to one or both of your arms or your neck ? seek emergency medical care immediately. A trip to the emergency room could save your life ? or bring you peace of mind if nothing is seriously wrong with your health."

The shortness of breath, sweating nausea and dizziness pretty much means heart attack. So if that starts to happen you call 911. But it can be a lot of things. My spazoid 20yo 112lb. gf went through this during exams and it was determined to be inflamed chest cartilage. I say take some ibuprofen for the hell of it. It won't hurt.

edit: and no doubt go to the campus clinic as soon as reasonable

If the chest pain is constant then it's not going to be heart related the chest pains will come and go before a heart-attack. Could be build-up of gas, perforated ulcer would cause chest pain, gallbader infection problems, upper GI problems. If your having back, shoulder pains and shortness of breath ,dizzynes with the chest pains then get yourself to an ER right now and get a EKG.

No, no other symptoms, no pain anywhere else, and (from checking my own pulse, which I know isn't a scientific method) my heart seems entirely regular. Just chest tightness.

I'd go to the doctor. Definitely doesn't sound like a heart attack but it is probably a good idea to get it checked as soon as possible.

Since your so young I bet it's a build-up of gas or a upper GI problem. Go get some antacid anti gas like Malox and see if that clears it up.

The probability of a 20 year old with cornary artery disease is like .000000001%. It may be (but also unlikely) some other heart condition like a congenital birth defect but those generally manifest symptoms prior to age 20. Does the pain occur at rest or when you are working your heart (excerise, sports, yard work, etc...)? If it is occuring at rest then it is definately not coronary artery disease. You can slo be less worried if you don't have any family history of CAD.

Its probably heart burn, possibly costochondritis, or at worst an anxiety attack.

I had something like that a couple years ago. Turned out to be allergies causing an asthmatic-like condition that made breathing a little harder. (But not enough to notice) The extra stress caused chest pains. Went on Singulair - Problem solved.

But all the same... go see a doctor.
