Been eyeing Ryzen Gen 2 for DC projects

Hope everyone is well. Been looking into possibly getting back into boinc projects. Need better case/cooler for I5 4590 but might be putting it in daughters room. I haven't been following how Ryzen performs on Asteroids/Universe/skynetpogs & other projects I spent a lot of time to.

I noticed the new Ryzen Gen 2 CPUs have some decent coolers included but not sure if they are good enough for 100% load 24/7.

I recently purchased a Ryzen 5 1600 for DC that came bundled with a cooler, and it has no trouble running 24/7 even with a mild 3.6 GHz OC. Right now it's at about 97% load and 66°C core temp, 27°C ambient. It could be that I'll need to remove the overclock this summer, but actually I doubt it, since I'm totally willing to put up with mid-seventies for CPU temp.

The Gen 2 Ryzens should have similar heat characteristics, clock-for-clock, but they have slightly better IPC.

I was pleased with the stock cooler performance on 1st generation Ryzen 1700 processors. IPC is approximately around Haswell, but SMT yields are better on Ryzen so overall performance tends to be better, depending on the project. For WCG, I get around 227 points per hour of run time on Windows 10 with Ryzen. Apples to oranges, but that's slightly more than I got with Skylake-EP cores in Debian 9, and Debian is more efficient...

I have a 2700X arriving next week, so I should be able to comment on 2nd generation Ryzen stock coolers by the end of next week.

Ryzen Zen 2 will net you about 15~20% performance bump. You may want to wait around and see if some of the older zen chips come down in price. I think some good deals are to be had in the next coming months on ryzen chips. Got a few power supplies sitting around that I got for dirt cheap, waiting for new system builds. Hoping I can get a nice deal on a 1700X. We'll see. I'm in no rush.

RAM seems to be higher than I recall on my last rig 3 years ago. Seems like a lot of people going with 16GB. I don't get close to using all of my 8GB on Windows 10.

8 GB RAM should be good for lots of DC projects on an 8C/16T host. But some projects want a lot more; for example Yoyo@home's ecm (about 2 GB per task) or LHC@home's VirtualBox based applications (2 GB per task for CMS and LHCb, even more for ATLAS).
