Edit😀ecided to go with the 750Ti for the moment and see what the next round of GPUs has to offer. Thanks for the input.

Looking to get back into gaming, I have a Dell XPS 710 with a Q6600 and 8GB of RAM. I need some advice on what graphics card to get the maximum out of what I have. I plan on gaming using 1080.

I would suggest that you mention your PSU, Case, budget and other such. Also mention if you predominantly play Nvidia sponsored games or not.
 
That Q6600 will heavily bottleneck you at stock. A Haswell i3 is substantially faster and that is only a hyperthreaded dual core.
 
used 7970? Gtx 750?
Compared to "modern" architecture..
Core2 is pretty lacking nowadays..
Quadcore Yorkfield suffers in heavy-duty games.
Kentsfield even worse.
I'm running a G3258 right now..It plays Skyrim like buttah 😛

If you don't mind spending a wee bit more, i think you could pick up a AMD R9 280 or 280x on ebay for about 150 or so. I think performance wise, that will hold you in good stead with more modern games than will 750ti. A brand new 280 can be had on newegg for about $170 or so after rebate, so ebay can definitely be worked to something more acceptable to you.

On the other hand, 750ti will fit your system just fine without much of a sweat, but i fear some of the newer games may stretch it a bit.

From what I have read on the R9's vs 750 is that the R9's does have a slight edge, but it is also an energy hog compared to the 750.

I'd not say that the 7970/ 7950 or 280x/ 280 have a slight edge... i'd say that they'd do flatout better, unless it is a GameWrecks (Copyright rests with karlitos) title.

Yes, they don't sip power, but what do you do? I'd recommend waiting till may be the new 3xx series releases or GM200 and see what the prices are. However, if you're looking for a card around your budget, + or - a few or so, AMD offers more performance/ dollar and i doubt that will change. Importantly, i think your PSU can power it easily i reckon, so i'd spend a wee bit more for a few more shaders.

If power is indeed a big concern for you, i think the 7870/ 7850 rebrands, aka 270x/ 270 should fit you just fine. Though iirc, they're VLIW architecture, and not GCN, so there may be something there yet to explore in architectures and so on, whether which will serve you better in long term.

If you're worried about energy use get rid of the Q6600. The 280/7950 is a straight up way better buy than the 750 Ti. Buying 2GB in 2015 is just bad
