been forever since ive messed with the stuff, 4 years or so and i've forgotten which way the colors need to go, and where I need them to be crossovers. i have a surfboard cable modem which will go into a fs105 netgear switch. what cable do i need there (straight or xover). ill have 4 computers on the switch, 2 notebooks, 2 pc's. 1 pc will go directly from the nic to the switch (xover or straight here?). the other 3 will plug into the wall socket which ill setup. now the question is what cable will i need between the other pc's and the wall socket (xover or straight). ill assume the wall sockets are colored on the back which should make life easier. next question, which color order is correct? basically for a regular cable what do i need both ends to look like? and for an xover cable what do i need both jacks to look like? i couldnt really find what i wanted on the net and was hoping you guys could help out, and i know if i have to ask these things i shouldnt be doing this =) but im not paying these local plicks when i know i can get it working if i work at it. and the cable runs will be ~300 ft. which is under the length limit for cat5 i believe.

There are two standards for wiring Cat5 cable. We can choose one or the other since we are doing this ourselves. Let's go with 568a. The colors go from left to right:
1)White/green
2)Green
3)White/orange
4)blue
5)white/blue
6)orange
7)white/brown
6)brown
Hold the rj-45 connector tab down and slide over the wire ends. Do this the same on both ends for a straight cable. For a cross-over:1)white/orange 2)orange 3)white/green 4) blue 5) white/blue 6)green 7)white/brown 8) brown. The greens and oranges are swapped.

Generally, you only use a cross-over when connecting two like devices, for example:hub to hub,nic to nic. So all your cables should be straight.

cool that'll work! exactly what i needed. only other question is how will this go with the wall outlets? if i have white/green on the left on the plug (tab down) going into the wall, what color will the far right wire be on the inside of the outlet? white/green also and backwards of the way the cable is? (ie: will the white/green wire connect with a white/green wire on the other side of the wall, then do the same when that cable reaches another outlet). thanks.

That's a good link. From the cable to the wall socket, the colors should match(white/green to white/green).
