Beef sometimes smells like poop?

Every now and then, when I'm working with beef (cooked, uncooked, steak, hamburger, multiple sources/vendors, organic and inorganic) I get a... whiff... and it smells or tastes, for a split second, really horrifyingly awful.

Then it's over, and it's delicious steak.

What is wrong with me? Or am I picking up on some weird dead-meat thing?

If it only happens when you take a bite, you might try washing your hands, and maybe look at better toilet paper. :D

Oxidized blood can smell like that. Give your meat a rinse to get rid of it

i agree. if i have a pot roast cooking overnight, i'll wake and think "WHO CRAPPED IN HERE???" and then remember that it is the pot roast and it smells fine.

but for 5 seconds, it smells exactly like a poop instead of a meat.

Could meat have sulfur in it?

I swear some medications smell like sulfur when you smell the bottle.

Just because you throw food away when it falls on the floor doesn't mean the butcher does. :colbert:

Is it cold when you work with it? I find cold beef can smell pretty awful. Especially ground beef. Almost like a "rotten meat" smell. But if you cook it or warm it up (if it's already cooked) then the smell goes away.

On similar subject, when eating chicken, every now and then I get a very foul tasting bit, I have to spit it out. I can never figure out what it is, it happens with self cooked chicken as well as ordered/prepared foods. Though it tends to be more common in lower grade stuff like fast food or TV dinners. I find I can't enjoy chicken as much anymore as I'm always worried to bite into that. As far as I know those parts look the same as any other so you can't really look for it and avoid it.
