Think of it this way:
Considering the expected lifespan of a mattress/boxspring is 10 years and most people keep them LONG past the point of being worn out, $500 is NOTHING.

I got a nice full pillow-top and box-spring at BJs for $450.

Get a Select Comfort bed. They have like 20+ year warranties.... well worth it when you consider you won't buy a new one for alooong time.

I once read that after 10 years the weight of a mattress nearly doubles in weight from all the dead skin and sweat. That being said, I still paid quite a bit for my bed (around $1200 for a queen) because a good night sleep makes a huge difference during the day. If I'm tossing and turning all night, I'm miserable the next day (and the fiancee is even worse!), so after ten years it's about $120/year or less than $0.33/day (not accounting for inflation), which seems pretty cheap.

Buying a bed is like buying a car. The salesmen are always ready to negotiate.

Find a garage sale or auction and get a waterbed.

I got a queen sized one for $20 at an auction and went and got a new "mattress" for it (the high-tech waveless ones) for $100. It's warmer in winter and cooler in summer than a normal bed.

im also buying a bed soon. Im gonna get mine at ikea. Im looking at the Queen ASPELUND-the bed frame is going to run me $179, and the bed itself is going to run me $199...bringing it to approzimately $386 w/ tax for the whole thing......good deal...i also have a twin and need something bigger...im 6 feet tall and i find my feet hanging off the thing eeek. But anyway, the mattress also has a 25 year warranty which i like...the mattress is called the SULTAN HOGBO..with an accent thingy on the first O, yea its sweedish.

Not a bad deal. I cant find the Hogbo on the website. Are you in the US?

I've heard mixed things about ikea, never bought from them myself. One thing I have reservations about is the idea that their goods are low in quality and tend to fall apart easier than other furniture. But I guess since its cheaper you have to expect that.

i found it at the ikea site thru the mattress customizer. its prety cool. I think their mattresses are actually pretty comfortable...and if it lasts me through college, im fine.
