Becoming a fire figther?

Here in my city of ~50,000 all you need is a high school degree. Then you have to pass a rigorous physical test. The FD trains you themselves, I believe.

There's a written test and a very very difficult physical test. I've seen it. Now, if you want to be a volunteer firefighter, the physical test would be slightly easier to pass.

The written test? or the physical test?

I remember one where you have to carry a heavy dummy from one end of the room to the other end while wearing the full firefighter gear(smeared with ringworms other people wearing the same suit). Oh, and all the trials are timed, so you can't rest in between.

edit: I didn't take the test personally. It was my wife who wanted to try it, she couldn't even pass one trial.
 
One of my good friends just became a firefighter. He needed to take almost 4 years of schooling to even qualify. Then, there was a 2+ year waiting list. He got out of high school and decided to become a firefighter in '98. He got the job last summer. If anyone is counting, that is almost 6 years.

every city / township is different in their requirements. I was privy to parts of his training. Oh my god do they expect a lot. Carying 80+ lbs of equipment and then being able to carry out/drag a 200lb+ dummy. it was insane.

I can ask him what the classes were.
 
Also, I guess it depends on where you want to be a firefighter. I think there's a waiting list to be on NYFD, but there are plenty of spots for Hackettstownship FD.

Just for perspective I'll describe the PT for the Police Department. I assume it's nothing close to the FD (since fire fighting is more physical), but at least it'll give you an idea. Just think of this test plus all the FF gear...then maybe you'll be close. 😉

Started off dragging a 130lb dummy about 20 yards, then climb a set of stairs up & down twice, 50 yard dash, jump two 4-ft walls, serpentine run between a series of pylons, short sprint, jump a 4-ft fence and finish all under 60 seconds. I did it in 48 😀 (a SWAT team member did it in 42 :Q).
