Because Xbox is basicly a pc will we finally get to see new pc games you can play with an old pc?

Xbox is basicly a pc with a 733 mhz p3 processor, 64mb, of 200 mhz ddr, a geforce4, a 8 gig HD, and a DVD

So considering possible future ports will we pcgamers not have to upgrade as often?

but wasn't the xbox built strictly (optimized) for games? a modern pc isn't designed strictly for games.

Actually the PC hardware isn't so bad, a 1 GHz PC should overcome any hardware optimizations, but as long as your PC is using Windows the processor and memory will be partly "stolen" by all of the stuff MS wants to run all the time (hit ctrl-alt-delete and look at your running "processes" not "applications").

To answer the original question, maybe :) though for example id will be writing Doom3 for PCs first then dumbing it down for Xbox later, which means they won't necessarily be making it run well for even 1 GHz PCs. For ports going the other direction (Xbox->PC) odds are much better.

90-day warranty and $200 repair cost doesn't make me too eager :)
I like being able to do my own repairs, upgrades, and OS reinstalls. Not that OS reinstalls are fun, but being able to control them is.

Make an OS for gamers

Actually not that M$ will but if they included a boot option to disable all the stuff not required to play games in windows I think that would
boost performance a bit

Ahem the Xbox is built almost completely from off the shelf pc parts

The PS2 is radically different from a pc so I would say you arguement is mute

Only in the short run. Some of MS' longer-term plans are to have it play music, act as a Tivo, be a WebTV, etc.. There was a story this morning on ZDnet about a survey MS paid for to ask consumers about theri interest in using Xbox as a remote player for MP3/WMA files stored on their PC. It's off the main page now but the link should be around CNet/ZDNet somehwere.

The "just for games" PR is to reassure the game publishers, not a real promise.

hehe yes a gaming os:) then you'd have to add standardized gaming hardware.. no mods or changes. wait,... then your just building a console:)

ugh current consoles aren't radically different from pcs at all. game cube even uses a chipset from ati:p its not like the ps2 uses cartridges, it uses a dvd rom. its just missing a harddrive. dreamcast ran wince? until consoles start using things other then silicon chip cpu's/gpus they ARE basically computers:p

hell they all even have fans now:p

Although there was a report on ZDNet that there was a Microsoft-commissioned survey taken to gauge interest in a product linking the XBox to a PC for the purposes of playing MP3s or other "entertainment files". They disclaimed that it was strictly a survey and that no resources were allocated to such a product, but Microsoft's commitment to XBox in the face of incredible initial losses on investment really sounds to me like a power play to get into living rooms everywhere, and, conspiracy theorist that I am, I doubt they'd do that purely to enhance gaming and DVD playback experiences for their users.

Everyone cries that the XBOX is just a PC. The PS2 is the only console to actually have an OS released (linux), and is the only one that can currently run a word processor, spreadsheet, etc. Sounds to me like the PS2 is more of a computer than the XBOX. All it can currently do is play games and movies. Maybe it will change in the future, but it's obvious they are all just optimized computer parts that could go either way (functional computer or game system).

The only reason it runs so smooth is because all the games are locked at 640x480. So yeah, enjoy your outdated machine.

Hahahahaha.

Yeah windows booting up to a unix shell prompt. Don't you follow the antitrust trial, windows must contain all bloat in order to run at all. Everyone knows that??!!!??
