Because of SirUlli and others...

Because of SirUlli's posts and a growing interest in general, I've started getting more interested in radio-astronomy and space. 🙂

To that effect, I and a few others have formed our own organization here in west Michigan: GRRO - Grand Rapids Radio Observatory. Currently, our President has his own 10' dish that he uses to search for pulsars, as well a smaller home-made VLF(very low frequency) antennae to look for disturbances in the atmosphere. I'll be joining that effort in a couple weeks with a VLF setup of my own at my house(about six miles away), and plan to put up a 10' to 12' dish of my own this spring.

Both of these projects run custom software to record and analyze the data. A shared dream would be to get others involved in the analysis of the data, but that's still quite a ways off as we have numerous other issues to work out first. In any event, if any of you would like more info about our group or the projects we're doing, please send an email to inquire@grro.org, mention Team Anandtech, and ask for more info from Jim Van Prooyen(our president and resident amatuer astronomer). For my part, I'm mostly helping on the "I.T." side of things 😀 but I'm learning alot more about what goes on in the quest for answers.

Thanks to SirUlli and the whole rest of Team Anandtech for encouraging me to get more involved in the science(and not so much in just the stats). 😉

Good luck to ya. Sounds like alot of fun 🙂

I just found out not too long ago that one of the local collages runs a radio dish of some sort, or did run one in the past. Been meaning to get in contact with some one to see if it's still going. I used to read one of the Yahoo Groups forums on the subject, but it was a bit over my head.

In addition to his contributions to our TA forums, SirUlli has encouraged me read up on Space.com and The Planetary Society for myself. In so doing, I've discovered that there's so much more I can do even at the amatuer level. 😀

Right now, I'm concentrating on the VLF project because it's something I can easily do inside my house - much fun to work with my hands, wrapping 14 guage cable around PVC pipe to make an antenae. 😛 I can't wait until spring - that's when I'll be putting up the 10' dishes in my yard to help with the pulsar detection. It's kinda like going back to school.. where the knowledge you learn starts to build on itself, and each discovery makes you want to reach for more. 🙂

Hi networkman

That is nice....

when i first startet Seti in 19 Oct 1999, i was only a crunsher, and look at the Stats, but as times goes, t think i must go deeper, and so my interests are going to Why and what does this all mean...

i am a great Fan of Carl Sagan Most Visible Member of the Scientific Community of the Planet Earth

more Info for Carl Sagan i have postet in the BOINC Forums here

and so i decided to look behind the Lines, ...

and the Seti Community was a big Help here, there are so much people who are great and have more Info than i ever will learned, ....

so it is nice that i and other will help other crunsher to look at this

very Happy regards to you, and your new Group

Greetings from Germany
Ulli
