I was just watching a program about faces on TLC. It mentioned that beauty in the universe is directed by the ratio
1.618:1
for example
1. distance from the floor to your navel : distance from your navel to the top of your head
2. dist from chin to eyes: from eyes to top of head

This professor somewhere constructed a mask with all these ratios, supposedly the perfect face. Guess what, Elizabeth Hurley and Tom Cruise fit that mask perfectly.
So the ratio exists for men and women.

what do you guys think.

Wow, I didn't actually print out the mask, but comparing the mask with the glare from my monitor, I fit the mask pretty well. Too bad I still have a hard time finding chicks... :(

According to the program, the mask fits his face perfectly. I think it is impossible to scale beauty. Each individual has a different preference in the opposite/same sex. The TV show in inacurate and beauty can never be linked with mathematics.

Perhaps each individual recognizes their own flaws to an extent and becomes most attracted to that which they feel is attainable. Also, I don't think many people can be objective about the subject. I agree though, my biased outlook has specific preferences.

And that is a brilliant finding, but linking beauty to this ratio is insensible. Beauty is a concept which is a prefrence. I come across a lot of girls that I find attractive and my friends don't and vice versa.

Its pretty simple.

Evolution favours people who find mates who compliment them and have children physically fit, healthy and successful reprodutively.


This is a self reinforcing trend.

Well, most humans do tend to find artistic beauty in objects that are highly symmetrical, and I don't think the show (although I haven't seen it) is in any way trying to say beauty is confined to these terms, but objects that fit this description are more pleasing to the eye.

yes and also the beholder..
I think those with symmetrical faces tend to be more beautiful, but what is beautiful to some is not necessarily beautiful to all..

Tom Cruise..he used to look good back in the Top Gun and rainman days..but I don't think he is aging well.

Beauty wise..I like Tara Reid, jlh, J-Lo, and all the women of anandtech.

Yes, also it's what's on the *inside* of a woman that's important. I can't believe you guys are such jerks that you even care about this...
