Beats actually make sense for how most people use headphones

1. flat cord does reduce "microphonics." I'm surprised no one thought of it sooner.

2. Extended deep bass makes sense since bass is what is lost the most in a poor fit on the ear. Most people listen to music while moving, not sitting in a silent audition room.

You're right, it would be really surprising if no one else had thought of flat cords... 🙄

But they did, and they have.

By "how most people use headphones," I assume the meaning is kill the mids and boost highs and lows because I don't care about the actual entire song. All while charging an arm and a leg.

beats pulled an Olive Garden on the masses. For those that don't know any better, it's great and totally worth the price. For those that know, you can do vastly better for the same money.

The shortcomings of beats has been documented to death. Sounds like someone is either trying to justify a purchase or justify being on Apple's side after the purchase.

Most analysts seem to think the Beats purchase is more Apple trying to reestablish themselves as "cool". They've been losing a bit of ground in the younger market to Android phones lately. Samsung most notably.

Beat's targets the same market as obnoxious car sub-woofers. Kids who just want to blast the bass into their skull as loud as possible while looking "cool" doing it. Doesn't matter if the audio quality is actually good because we have an entire generation raised on compressed digital music. Of which Apple is the world's biggest retailer. They're both "luxury" brands as well. So Beats fits nicely into Apple's ecosystem, and the market they want to get back.

I'm sure Apple bought Beats primarily for their Spotify competitor (can't remember it's name), not the headphone line. The headphones are just a small bonus for them. The money is in the music streaming product.

Beats is Bose for a slightly younger market segment. Also, this thread is in the wrong sub now.

I do like the flat cord. But I recently bought a pair of headphones for $6, and they came with a flat cord. There is no way a flat cord is worth $3 billion since obviously no one has a patent on it. There is just no way the math works on this.

Now, sure. I don't even own beats, but I had a pair of cheap $20 headphones with a flat cord.

And it helps a lot, actually, keep the micro phonics down.

Gotta admit though. A lot of people buy iPhones as a fashion accessory.

You're right. I see a ton of people sitting in the coffee shop with their ipad or iphone who look around seeking approval because they use an Apple product. Then they glare at the guy down the way using a Note 3 or Surface Pro 2 as if they are inferior to them. They don't have to say it, it's in their eyes. Yet I know those devices do so much more than any Apple product.

Just the same I see people wearing beats like they have the best headphones in the world. Then I wear my generally ugly Sennheisers and get better sound. To me being functionally superior comes first.

Exactly.

It is 2014. If these "moving people" want a modern pair of headphones with high convenience they can get some of those waterproof bluetooth Motorolas.

But people want a fashion accessory on their head that happens to play music.

Beats gets a lot of crap from those "in the know" but you know what? I think they've done the world of music a service.

The last decade has had people listening to compressed MP3s and crappy ear buds - both of which are kinda Apple's fault. Beats might not be worth the money, and the same might get you a far superior pair of Senns or AKGs, but you know what? No one was buying those.

Beats made good headphones "cool" and has people appreciating better quality headphones. Its a drastic reverse from the last decade, and that's definitely a good thing.

And no - I'll never buy a pair.

No, they made bad headphones expensive because of marketing unfortunately. I'd even say the ATH M50 are better sounding than Beats Studio for 1/3 the price. How it looks doesn't justify mud in your ears. I think people need to stop worrying about how they look to everyone and stop trying to be a walking fashion statement though too. I understand that most good headphones look bad. Luckily Sennheiser Momentums look pretty slick.

This is very true. I don't think it was Apple's fault necessarily for crappy earbuds. People should've known better. And to just crank the volume up so their music leaks all over the public while using earbuds is pretty bad too.

Overall I think if people embrace Beats, we'll be one level up from crappy audio quality of Apple earbuds, but it's still far from what is considered good. That's fine though. I'll let the general public continue using their crap while I use my Westone W40s.

I've been saying the same thing but people just hate on the Beats. Before Beats, no one cared about sound quality at all except us techies/audiophiles. Now at least people consider it.

I don't think that's true. All they did was make buying Beats cool, not buying good headphones in general. They didn't seem to change people's minds about the other headphones they were ignoring anyway.

Too bad they have crappy treble. I would still prefer the HD600s or AKG K7xx series over the Momentums. But at least the momentums care a bit more about overall sound quality than beats. A step in the right direction one might say.

You underestimate how much better Beats are than the bundled earbuds everybody has been using. It's definitely a step in the right direction.
