Now I know that's supposed to be a funny commercial, but I think it's a poor reflection on our society. I mean, we've probably all seen kids like that in a store. If that were my kid, I would grab him, go directly home without buying what I needed, give him 2 or 3 snaps on the butt with the long edge of a plastic coat hanger, and keep him in his room the rest of the day.

Nobody I know that was spanked as a kid is horribly messed up now because of it. Most people look back on it and laugh. "Oh man, did my mother give it to me after that one!" No horrible emotional scaring. Of course by the time I have kids (I'm 24), spankings will probably be illegal, and I'll have to put up with a horrible brat that I can't reprimand because I'll get arrested.

*edit* auto parse, damnit!

I would have to say that i do not beat my kids. I do however spank them and use time outs. but the nonsense of no spankings at all is absurd. if i did not spank my child he would never leave his room.

I'd take the kid to the doc and get him some ritalin or something. (this is a joke. I'm editing this hours after posting it because people don't bother to read)

I'm sorry all of you child abusers can't outsmart a kid ;)

Finally, POST NUMBER 500. It's such a round number.

I got my butt beat daily when I was a kid. I've gotten a few worse things too, like having my head slammed into a concrete porch as I was about to throw a temper tantrum. Only thing that really worked on me was leather. Everything else, got broken as it hit me. But I'm a fine, responsible adult now, except for this constant twitching I have now, but I have learned to deal with that.

I was spanked as a kid, and it didn't scar me. In fact, I think it was very good for discipline, and I think I'll do the same for my kids. Parents these days are listening to way too many people telling them they're not the boss of their own children.

Hey,
I don't want to be a PC police but I noticed something about my hippy cousin's kids - they actually know why they're being punished and don't repeat negative behavior.. It's freaking odd seeing that from 4 to 8 year olds but it's amazing.. I'm asian so I also notice the polar opposite- kids that get the crap beating out of them for caughing.. Those kids don't repeat the offense out of fear of getting beating and not because they know that they're not behaving properly..

(may I add that my bratty nephews just do the negative behavior that their parents beat them for doing whenever their parents are not around.. They freaking go crazy and run around stores screaming as long as their dad's not around to whip em..)

Some say that Ritalin is a crutch for bad parents who can't control their kids.

I'm of the opinion that it is prescribed too often, but am well aware of children that truly need it.

Heh ... you want to see people spin up ... try smacking your kid on the butt in the middle of a grocery store. Had somebody come up and threaten to call the police on me for one quick swat (which nipped a potential grand-mal tantrum in the bud by the way). Frankly ... for some kids, some times, it's the only way to get their attention.

My rule of thumb though ... the kid never gets a spanking if I'm angry.

My dad did that to my brother once in a grocery store. We were warned to keep our hands in our pockets because my brother liked to pick things up. He picked up the biggest jar of mayonaisse you have ever seen and my dad whooped his butt right there and some old lady threatened to do the same thing. She went and got the store manager and when he came over, my dad told him that they had a problem with disciplining my brother for picking something up, he was gonna let my brother run loose in the store and pick up and break anything that he wanted. Needless to say, they walked away.

Yea, I agree completely. I think it is often a crutch.
I talked to some parents recently who claim their kids ... all 3 of them ... are ADHD, and are taking ritalin. Now I don't know the whole story, but from their description, I and most of my friends, siblings, cousins, etc. should have been drugged up for most of our childhood by those standards. Kids are kids. Instead we got "kinetic behavioral therapy" on occasion.

LMAO at using "rule of thumb" in a thread about spanking.
That's comedic gold.

Heh ... that is pretty funny. Didn't even see it myself :D

I haven't seen the video yet, but I'm guessing the kid is a good argument in favor of using birth control?
