Beastie Boys: yay/nay?

In my last class of school today, Sabotage just popped into my head I started humming the tune. I downloaded a it and a bunch of their other songs and videos once I got home.

Not the entire thing but the melody and rhythm of the lyrics.

Great band but unfortunately their whiney politics distract me from ever watching them live.

I have seen them a number of times live and I never noticed any political agenda during their shows.

Of course, I haven't seen them in probably five years.

It's pretty bad. Yacht starts whining about Tibet and all this stuff. I have nothing against their causes, it's just I would like to see music, not a political rally.

I give them a yay, but . . .

Licensed to Ill is great for what it is. The "She's On It" EP was a great codicil to that record. - I give LTI a 8/10.

Paul's Boutique is pure genius, and more or less defines its era of rap music (that is, the days when widespread sampling was feasible without a flood of lawsuits). 10/10

Check Your Head is good, but not brilliant IMO. 7/10

Ill Communication is a definite step down. 5/10

Hello Nasty is a marginal outing all around. 3.5/10

I think the problem with the Beasties is that they grew up - I think their early music is fantastic, but they got boring as they became more socially responsible. This speaks well of them as human beings, but makes them less interesting to me as a band.

It's probably best that I haven't seen them in a while then. 😀

You have a good point there. Thankfully they AREN'T those kids who first shot to fame back in '86 - '87 with huge blow up bottles of beer and phallic symbols on stage because if they were still doing that at their age it would be ridiculous. I mean at the time they were a novelty with really catchy songs that I enjoy to this day but everbody has to move on.

YAY!! - who else could pull off Boomin Granny

Boomin' Granny, Boomin' Fanny
Boomin' Granny, Good And Plety
Because I Saw Ya At The Check Out Line
You Dropped Your Coupons And You Were Looking Fine
Sophisicated, And So Mature
I Couldn't Really Care If You're 50 Or 74
Becaues I Want Ya, And I Need Ya

I agree completely - I just miss the Paul's Boutique days. That album is musically and lyrically just stunning. It is amazingly literate, yet brilliantly funny at times.

yay

"which came first, the chicken or the egg?
i egged the chicken, then i ate his leg"

"i got the girlies in the coop like the colonel's got the chickens"

paul's boutique is definitely my top 5 of all time.
