I am building a new beast of a machine and I am in a debate about which processor I should use, I know this that I will use a giga-byte motherboard with it the system specs are as follows

Antec True Power 550w PS
Logitech Cordless MX Duo
2x1024 Ifineon Technologies PC 3200 ECC ram
4x250GB Maxtor SATA HDD
PNY Geforce FX 5900 Ultra
Lite-on 8X Dual Drive
Memorex 48x24x48 CD-RW
30" NEC LCD display
and the debate is between the case
and the 64 FX 51 or the 64 3400

I'd get the 3400+ you'll be able to get performance in the same neighborhood (or better in a few cases) and be able to use regular DDR memory. If you have a swimming pool full of $100 bills, then by all means go for the FX-51. IIRC, the FX does have completely unlocked multipliers if that matters.

Athlon 3400+ in my opinion..

Why?

Most a64 boards are a wee bit more mature by now.. alot of them are much more stable and bug free then the socket 940s..

Ram.. Fastest Reg ram ive seen runs 2-3-2-6 timings.. but.. reg ram adds around a cycle per timing.. it would more likely be running at around 3-4-3-7=bad >.<

If you need a wee bit of proof.. go to www.futuremark.com.. the 3rd place person has a 3200.. AND he doesnt have near the cooling as 1 and 2 have..(cascade).. thats damn good for not having really really good cooling..

I suggest you just wait intill newcastle comes out. Also, no sooner do you buy a motherboard now it will be outdated in just a few months when PCI Express shows up.

Good article to check out

no money is not a problem, I was just wondering which is better

of course not if your getting a 30" LCD!!!!!!!

However LCDS are going to be replaced with something better soon (cant remember what the tech was called) So Id really have to say that your $2000+ system will be almost 100% outdated within 6 months to a year.
