Bears fire Jauron!

"Just two years after coaching the Chicago Bears to a 13-3 season and their first division title in 11 years, Dick Jauron has been fired.

ESPN.com first reported Jauron's dismissal Monday morning. The Bears have scheduled a 2 p.m. ET news conference to announce his firing.

The decision was hardly a surprise, given that Chicago had only 11 wins combined in the past two seasons and never matched the competitive level of Jauron's 2001 team. While the Bears did play hard down the stretch, winning four of their final six games to flirt with the .500 mark, most insiders expected it would not be enough to save Jauron's job.

In his five seasons as head coach, Jauron, 53, compiled a 35-46 record, including 0-1 in the postseason.

Jauron has one year remaining on his contract, at a salary believed to be $2.2 million-$2.5 million, and the Bears are responsible for that. It is possible Jauron could be considered for any of the other vacancies expected to be created this week and he might also be a candidate for a defensive coordinator's job with a number of franchises.

Speculation about Jauron's job status has swirled for the past year, since the Bears crumbled to 4-12 last season, a nine-game fall from 2001.

General manager Jerry Angelo inherited Jauron when he came to the club and felt that he deserved an opportunity to work with a head coach he brought to organization. Over the last few days, the McCaskey family, which owns the Bears, told Angelo that it would prefer he retain Jauron, but would not stand in his way if he opted to fire the head coach.

Sources said that Angelo made the decision to replace Jauron weeks ago and that the late-season surge did not sway him. In the wake of persistent rumors, Angelo announced last week that there would be a speedy resolution of Jauron's status when the season concluded.

Angelo and team president Ted Phillips are rumored to be in line for contract extensions.

To his credit, Jauron leaves the Bears as a team with potential, largely because he played so many youngsters in 2003. The club enjoyed a solid draft in 2003 and those players, as well as a core group of veterans with only two or three seasons of experience, should form an attractive nucleus for the next head coach. Jauron was fiercely loyal to his staff and that clearly was part of his undoing. Much of the criticism was directed at offensive coordinator John Shoop, but Jauron stood steadfastly by him.

Sources said there is no set timetable for identifying candidates. Angelo plans to work quickly, without sacrificing thoroughness. Angelo is a longtime friend and admirer of LSU coach Nick Saban but, because the Bears aren't likely to overspend for a coach, he might be out of the franchise's price range."

I like how it's so easy to blame the coaches first...players second.

....and it's always the coach getting the credit for wins and not the players (Bengals)

Jauron didn't have alot to work in regard to his team.

well in the bengals case it was the coach...the owner finally gave the coach some power and marvin lewis did change things (not enough yet though)

the team lost 2 pro-bowl players and went from 2-14 to 8-8 ...thats a pretty good turnaround

well the bears needed to do something. they sucked.

hopefully they can get someone in and straighten out the team.

like maybe get a QB that dont suck.

Lewis did help turn the team around, but he is getting 100% of the credit.

One case where my point doesn't work is w/ the Bucs. I didn't hear one bad thing about Gruden. I'd bet they don't say anything bad about him if they finish 2-14 next season...

This is a shame, Jauron is a good coach. It's unfortunate that they couldn't get a QB to play well until the very end of the season, and Jauron is getting the blame for it...😕

Juaron would not fire Jon Schoop, so in my mind this was 1 year too late.

Schoop is the worst OFF COORD in the league.

He had a decent offense, despite what many think of Stewart. Thomas, Booker, both productive guys. The offense sucked, not Juaron. But he hired him and would not fire him, so he made his own bed on this one.

so what about parcells in dallas, Did he deserve all the credit he got?? what about belicheck in NE?? did he deserve all that credit??

actually, this season WAS in my opinion, the season of the Head Coaches, they were HUGE, of course in atlanta, having Vick go down in Preseason probably hurt Reeves more than he deserved. Atlanta would have more than likely been a 500+ team had Vick NOT gone down and may have even won that division.

Compare Jauron to Wannstedt, who had more talent?? which one should have been fired and which one retained.

I think Jauron did a better job with less than Wannestedt did.

Miami SHOULD have made the playoffs this season.

.... and people have been prasing RUDI and Chad johnson...

oh we also lost our RB for the last 6 years in dillon

I wasn't saying I think Wanstadt deserves to stay in Miami. He coached the Bears prior to Juaron, and I feel Juaron is better too.

There is no way with the personel that Miami has, that they should not be in the playoffs. All those pro-bowl defenders, and Ricky on offense. That is just sad.

I like Juaron. He is a Yale boy. I just strongly dislike an offensive coordinator who runs screens on 3rd and long, and runs the ball with 19 seconds left in the redzone, forcing a Timeout, and then a pass play short of the endzone and time expires in the first half of Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Ludicrous. Hopefully the new Off Coord decides to throw with Grossman or whomever.

I've just heard a lot more about Marvin than the team.

The only coach that I feel makes a team 100% better is Bill Parcells (Don't know what happened during the sAints game). Maybe he is intimidating to the players. I don't know.

🙂

I forgot that wannstedt was in Chicago before Jauron.

ya, Wannstedt has sucked it up BIG time in miami, and i like the guy too, but there is NO way he can NOT make the playoffs with that team. last year too. how can you lose in the 2nd half of the last game of the season like that.

Jaron seemed to be one of the most respected people in the league, character-wise, but if he thought Shoop was doing a good job, then Jaron must have really sucked judgement-wise.

So whatever it takes to get rid of Shoop is all good.

And the 13-3 record a few years ago was little shy of a myth. They won about 3 miracle games in overtime because of their defensive tips/picks while their offense was still completely inept.
