Bear fighting tactics needed

I'm hiking in the backcountry of smokey mountains where there is reportedly 1 bear every 1 square mile.

Will be mating season, so I need to know how to fight black bears w/out a gun.

I currently just have a small tactical style buck-knife with a 3 inch x 2 inch blade, pretty sturdy and sharp for stabbing, but I would have to be real damn close.

I was thinking maybe just pick up a stick along the way and use it as a pike against a bear? Like stick it in it's mouth or something.

Apparently you can't play dead w/ aggressive black bears

Uh, why would you go hiking in the middle of mating season without a gun?

You can google it yourself, but people have been mauled while trying to take a bear down with their sidearm, let alone using a knife or a stick. I'm pretty sure the S&W 500 was brought to market for precisely this reason.

I'd suggest a large caliber handgun backing up some sort of 30 cal rifle. That or stay home.

Yer totally going to get raped by a bear... :disgust:

If you even see a bear it will be a total accident. And even then you probably wont even know you ran into him until you hear him running away. If he decides to charge you, your knife won't penetrate the skin/fat. It will be slightly worse than a nasty paper cut to him assuming you even get a shot in. (Not likely)

If you're that worried carry a large calibre hand gun. A .357 or a .44 usually does the trick. But always remember... five for the bear... and failing that... one for yourself.

No ninja moves or anything? Jeez, you guys are making this sound hard.

The average bear in this area this time of year is 3 ft high, 6 ft standing, and weighs 250 lb

From recent news: play dead, wear bearsuit, make noise, bear horn, bear mace.

From common sense: bring a piece.

Bear spray, although I would still carry a handgun. If they are really determined to eat you, bear spray doesn't stop them.

A big dog, on a leash might help. The leash so the dog doesn't chase after them, leading you to an unpleasant confrontation.

I'd still carry a firearm, but if you won't, at least get a huge ass knife just in case the bear spray doesn't work.

Something else that might be handy, get one of the spiked neck collars like for S&M. That might discourage a bear from ripping your throat out should he ever get close enough to take a bite.

Yeah, but apparantly what killed that guy was that he came back during an off-season and encountered bears who are not used to seeing people.

WHat if I gave the bear peanut butter and crackers? Would it get such bad dry mouth and horrible swallowing problems it would run off into a stream?

oh goodness... if you even see one, which is somewhat unlikely, they will be running from you. you really don't need to worry about it that much. just make some noise while you are hiking, bears don't really care if you are around, as long as you don't spook them. I came up on one in michigan, a black bear, and he just looked at me like "wtf" and wandered back into the woods.

I used to live in Kodiak, AK. The government would give the Young Adult Conservation Corp .270 rifles for bears. You should make lots of noise in the woods to scare the bear rather than startle it. We never thought handguns were good for bears.

You could also dress like a female bear so the male bears won't be mean to you. Dress conservativly as a bear, don't wear suggestive bear outfits.

A guy was being chased by a grizzly at Mt. McKinley Park in Alaska. While running he threw down his pack with the food in it. The bear went after the pack. The guy ran away.

No. What killed that guy (and his girlfriend) was his complete lack of common sense. He was a moron. Darwin won.

um....bears in mating season, particularly males, are going to be much more agressive than normal. Generally they will avoid you - black bears we are talking about - but if you know you are going there at that time, it's unlikely you can do much against them without a gun...they are simply much stronger
