I will be leaving this week and I have seen all the reviews about the beach clubs. I am renting a vehicle and will check out the island, what out of the way beaches should I check out? And in Progreso, what to do besides the 2 bucks double decker bus tour?

Not worth renting a car on Cozumel, take the taxis. go to Chankanab park, the beaches on the south shore, snorkel or dive the reef to the south. The ruins at the north end are interesting if you are into that, but pretty meager compared to the stuff on the mainland.

Lies. Rent a car and drive to the east side of the island. I doubt you can swim since the currents are crazy (it's the side open to the caribbean) but it's GORGEOUS and there are random bars every few miles.

Nothing for miles....bar....nothing....bar. It's absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend.

The taxi will drop you off, and there is one swim area and a day shack over on the east side.
It is a semicircular beach with some sand. The rest of the east side is huge surf and large chunks of coral grinding up in it. The Mexican government bought up all the land over there, even took out the rest of the power lines. There was one abandoned hotel property still standing over there when we went.
We paid a taxi driver $25 to take us for basically the whole day around the island.

I think the good Ms. Rubycon might know something about Cozumel, if memory serves me correctly.

I believe she sent me a picture of some of the absolutely insane power pole wiring there. :)
