Beach Camping

When I grew up in Brazil, I remember going camping often with my parents at the beach. It's actually quite popular. It's like camping in the woods except you pitch a tent on the sands instead of dirt. I've never heard of anyone doing this here in the U.S. Any ever do it here? Can you just camp out on a public beach?

Once me and some friends stayed up all night on the beach (just chilled, talked, watched the sunrise)...

Cops drove by every hour or two to check on us/make sure none of us were sleeping/remind us it was illegal to camp/sleep on the beach.

Wouldn't recommend trying.

I camped right on the shore of the potholes (near moses lake/sand dunes) and it sucked. Got really windy at night, and we were out doing something and we came back and our tent was flying in the wind with the top facing down because it was tied to a branch of a nearby tree. Think tent-kite....

Sand gets on everything and the wind chill sucks.
