Be very careful when re-pinning a MOLEX

Long story short, while sleeving my cables I mis-pinned 1 (out about 10) MOLEX connector that just so happened to be the one I split between my 2 WD800JD drives. No, it wasn't the grounding pins, couldn't possibly be that lucky. No, it was the 5V and 12V pins... very anti-climactic death I must say.

So all my data is sitting on 2 dead WD800JD's with burnt out 5V rails and I'm hoping beyond all hopes that I might be able to swap out PCB's. In fact I did just that with a drive manufactured in Jan of this year. EXACT drive as far as I can tell, expect mine were manufactured on may and june 2004 respectively and this new drive was made this very month. Sad to say, the drives just sound "confused" with the new PCB slapped on.

I've been looking at the numbers on the drives and just about everything matches up, besides the serial numbers of course. Now here where I'm hoping some briliant AT'er can help me out; where the heck can I find the firmware number for thse drives to ensure they match? I'm suspecting/hoping that is why the new PCB didn't work, but I can't be sure until I confirm their firmware numbers. It's saturday night, if you're reading this I hope you're bored and up for a challenge because I could REALLY use the help...

It's funny how people call it a "Molex" connector when Molex is a company that makes about a zillion different kinds of connectors. :D

Sorry I can't help, but at least I bumped you.

For Western Digital drives:

There is a model number, for example: WD400EB - 32CPF0

The 32CPF0 is the firmware.

There is also a DCM revision, in this example: DSCANQ2A. AFAIK, DCM is not imperative but the firmware is.

Good luck.

Cheers!

Hey thanks shark. Seems I DID NOT get a hold of drive with the same firmware; mine are WD800JD-00HKA0's and the new one I got is a -00HKA1. Crud... I'll have to see if I can hunt a cheap one down somewhere...
