Very important: do not vote for judges or other non-partisan positions if you don't know the candidates. Leave that line blank! There are no competency or education requirements to run for these positions, so if you vote for "Tim Smith" just because the name sounds good you could be voting a complete incompetent into your state's sumpreme court.

Same with initiatives and referendums: it's better not to vote on a specific item than to vote in ignorance. Here in Washington state we have a sounds-nice referendum to "give police/firefighters a voice in their pension plan" that could cost the state hundreds of millions a year in extra spending because of details in the fine print.

Your state voter's guide usually has information for and against, and looking at who is endorsing a candidate or proposal and who is opposing it / them can be helpful.

Your local newspaper's editiorial section usually has recommendations with the reasons why. You may be able to read it online if you don't get the paper (here in Seattle, www.seattletimes.com)
