A friend of mine was having extreme viral probelms so as a last resort he formatted his hard disc using fdisk. His problem now is that when hr tries to install windows it says he doesn't have enough memory for setup as it can't read his hard drive. For the life of me i van't remember what to do. He needs your help before he gets too far behind hid coursework. He has a full win95 CD and both 98 and me updates. His future is in your hands....!!

fdisk is used to set up partitions, not format.

Did he format after using fdisk? This must be done for anything to install on the harddrive.

He needs a good Windows Emergency Startup/Boot diskette. That will install HIMEM.SYS and other essentials like CD ROM support, etc., so he or she can proceed with the installation.

run fdisk delete the primary partition, then create a new one, next insert your win 98 cd and in bios list the cd-rom as the first boot device, save and restart, next boot up through the cd-rom and say start windows 98 setup, then it will ask if you want to format, say yes and you are on your way, all you have to do is follow the instructions.

That's what i thought but he doesn't have a full win98 only the update. With that Cd as first Boot device the drivers are loaded but when window setup checks the registry it says windows require so many bytes for set up. The question is how to reformat the drive without being able to access it.

You need a windows 98 boot disk that contains fdisk and format.exe. Boot the computer with this disk in and run fdisk again. Delete the primary partition and set up a new one.

Then, back at the command line, type format c: /s

Also, if all he has is the upgrade disk it will ask him for a previous version of Windows to prove prior ownership.

if u need a bootable disk, go to www.polarfox.com , go to the bootdisk section, download a disk for 95 (whatever version of it he has) to u're hard drive, run the program, it'll tell u to put a floppy in, do that, wait abit, u have a bootable floopy with cdrom support, cd rom will be R: , boot up with the floppy in, type r:\setup.exe and it should start installing windows if all goes well
