Be glad you don't live in Detroit

That's pretty bad.

I guess there is hope with this city council however, that the city will turn around (granted, this is just one guy's commentary, I wonder if it is accurate).

Detroit gets exactly what it deserves, stupid leadership. They keep voting morons into those positions, they deserve what they get... I just don't want our money as taxpayers to keep flowing to places like Detroit that run themselves into the ground with stupid leadership.

Even if the median value of homes sold was 300K I'd still be glad I don't live there.

DING DING DING

The fact that Kwame was so popular is a testament to that.

It's sad that detroit politics usually come down to "sticking it to the man" - all you have to do to run for a public office is be black and imply that the city is "ours". Race warfare (for lack of better term) and us vs. them mentality has been running that place for ages.

I wish the median price of a home sold here was 7000. Granted I also hope the quality of people remained the same as well.

On a positive note, Detroit's homicide rate dropped 14 percent last year. That prompted mayoral candidate Stanley Christmas to tell the Detroit News recently, "I don't mean to be sarcastic, but there just isn't anyone left to kill."

Or they moved elsewhere.

This story is hilarious in a sadistic way.

Call me crazy, but at those prices it seems almost insane not to Buy 1. I find it very difficult to believe that a city is going to just cease to exist and that it's Homes will never recover in value.

Detroit proper is mortally wounded from an economic standpoint. I'm sure you'll also owe a good amount in taxes too. Then comes the realization that no matter how cheap you got it you now own a dilapidated home in the closest thing this country has to a war zone.

Free isn't cheap enough.

Would it not be an ok place to retire to? IE if you don't need a job, buy one of these houses, retire there, save your current house till prices go back up and then sell it. Instant cash.

Umm, what exactly about Detroit makes it an attractive place to retire? The cold winters? The high crime rate?

Exactly. Even if someone would hand it to me free, I'd say "No", because I'm sure the wonderful city there will nail you to the wall with some insane amount of taxation and force you into all sorts of insane regulations. Nope, I would not take property there at any price.

In most cases, I'd agree that *at some point*, the situation will get better and your investment would pay off. However, in the case of Detroit, I think it's going to be like this forever.

Maybe the gangs/thugs that would prowl around your house at night.

You can find a multitude of smaller towns to retire in for not a lot more money that don't have any of Detroit's problems. Personally, I'm not retiring anywhere that isn't sunny, warm, and doesn't have hot cabana boys to refill my rum and coke.

Uh.... retire... in Detroit? Are you insane? Detroit would rank somewhere with Falluja in terms of great retirement destinations ;)

I wish I could sell our house, no where near Michigan, since all markets will be median $7500 in 1-2 years but I can't convince the boss of this.

You can buy space in a warehouse in Detroit. I've actually thought about it. Pimping out a warehouse in a shitty town with a good night life would be sweet. If I could telecommute and keep my la $ life would be sweet.

Damn I did a web check on prices and found a ton of places starting at $475 with a mortgage of 2 odd dollars a month. Shit, you could pay for that with coke cans.

Sounds like a great city for Libertarians, with a crippled government and citizens 'doing their own thing'. If that thing is gangs, well, I told you so.

All the citizens need to do is to form that wonderful efficient economy that doesn't need any help from the government. Don't need government schools, hospitals, etc., right?

Go see the movie grand torino. My post is not meant to slight Asians... but rather the bleak neighborhood the Clint Eastwood's character finds himself in. If you are into barricading yourself in your home and keeping your guns at the ready... sure it might be a decent place to retire.
