Are we still looking at Verbatim as the best in terms of blank discs for BD-R? Or are there other brand out there that are just as good but cheaper? How about in 50GB discs? And must they always be HTL?

Verbatim makes dye-based LTH BD-R discs. AVOID!

(Real BD-Rs, the HTL variety, use a much longer-lasting phase-change material. Sure, they cost marginally more, but I think that real BD-R media is worth it for the longevity.)
 
I've used LTH and HTL and LTH gave some trouble with playback. I'd stick with HTL just for compatibility. I haven't had problems with Verbatim, Sony, and Optical Quantum media but I don't have a whole lot of test data to provide.
 
So Verbatims are still ok. And these Optical Quantums I see on Amazon are actually good?
Is there any list anywhere of HTL discs and how to spot them? I don't really trust the ads on Amazon.
 
Any of the specialty CD-R media websites will have accurate info and you can just match the part numbers or whatever. I have personally had no issues with the optical quantum discs for making home movies for the family. Nobody has said they didn't play. I don't have much info beyond that.
