BCS Week 4 Predictions

Train

Lifer
ESPN/USA Today poll is out; Oklahoma,USC,LSU then Ohio State
AP poll hasnt been released yet.

Who do you think will roud out the BCS top 5 teams? Does USC have the sugar bowl locked up? Im gonna go out on a limb and say Michigan will end up 5th, in the BCS, which means if Ohio State beats them, they will get mad quality win points, and could possibly jump over USC with thier weak remaining schedule.

If USC wins out they should go to the Sugar Bowl regardless of what OSU does. Also, if OSU beats Michigan they will drop out of the top 10, so OSU will get no quality win points.

If there are three one loss teams at the end of the season (possibly USC, LSU, OSU), regardless of how they played, the one with the strongest SOS should go IMO.

I think the only possible loss for USC coming up is against Oregon State (their final game)... and I don't think that is very likely.

But dont forget if OSU wins out, at least one of the teams OSU defeated will end up in the top 10; Iowa, Purdue, Mich State, Michigan, one of them will definetly creep in.

Uh, they haven't beat Purdue yet. If Purdue plays like they did on Saturday, they'll walk all over OSU.

There isn't any particular reason for OSU, USC, or LSU to be ranked in any certain order, it's just meaningless BS opinions that have them ranked in the present order, in the ESPN and AP polls.

But of the three, Ohio State has by far the hardest last three opponents, they won the first of those 3 yesterday, if they manage to beat Purdue and especially Michigan, they will have earned a solid claim to leapfrog LSU and USC in the AP and ESPN polls, since they didn't deserve to be behind them in the first place.

And even if those polls based on opinions don't give Ohio State fair consideration, the unbiased parts of the BCS system may reward the Buckeyes enough to get them to number 2, almost surely number 3, in the BCS.

But job one is to stay focused on Purdue, they are a great team and hopefully it will be another great game, like most Big Ten games are..

LSU has got a couple of tough games coming up. They will probably be #3 in the BCS after this week, but may not still be there at the end of the season.

Specifically, they are playing UM (University of Mississippi, that is) who is 8-2 on the season and 6-0 in their conference. They will also have to play Arkansas, who is unranked but can still give any team a hell of a game.

Probably not much of a chance of LSU leaping to #2, though. 🙁

Edit for clarification. 😉

UM is 5-1 in the Big Ten. They lost to Iowa. They are also tied with OSU and Purdue in the conference.

Michigan and Mississippi are not the same school.

Right, good point. I'm used to thinking of UM as Michigan being that's where I'm from. My fault. 😱

I should have been more specific. 😉

Also I made an error, it looks like LSU might be ranked #4 in the BCS rather than #3 after this weekend.

OSU needs to kill Purdue and Michigan so they can move up in the polls. Otherwise, they have no chance. Thier strength of schedule (using all opponents) is 6th. USC is 25 and LSU is 43 (LSU will move up a little with the SEC championship).

OSU will lead in the computers, while USC will lead in the polls. OSU makes up almost a full point on SOS points. It's unlikely that they will make up better then 1 point in the computers over USC to make up for the 2 points poll difference. However, if OSU wins impressively both times and convinces 60+ voters (broken between AP and coaches) that they are better then LSU, they would then only have to be slightly ahead of USC in the computers.

The just released ESPN poll has #3 LSU ahead of #4 OSU by a very small margin, small enough that if OSU beats Purdue I would bet OSU will move to #3 in the week leading up to Michigan, this tends to happen in advance of big games like OSU vs Michigan, historically. This effect can already be seen by looking where Michigan is, #5.

Which means I think OSU has an excellent chance to control their own destiny by winning two very difficult games..

I would love to see OSU's number #3 ranked defense(#1 rushing) play Oklahoma.

Ohio State may not make it to the sugar bowl, but honestly i think they would give the sooners the best game out of anybody, thier defense could keep it "close", just look what they did to Miami last year, they were the only team all year that got to dorsey, and it worked.

I think that if OSU wins out, they should go to the Sugar Bowl. Regardless of how close OSU wins by or how much USC deystroys their opponents. The defending national champions should be able to defend their championship, as long as they are still ranked reasonably. If OSU and USC both end up with only 1 loss, how can you not give it to the defending champs?

Wilhelm got to Dorsey all right... the only question was if after that hit he was thinking "...what happened?" or "I am BATMAN!"

😀

Agreed.

Maybe the voters and computers think USC is a better team....last year doesn't matter.

Edit: Comps like OSU, but voters don't. That's how it works.

ya but notice OSU's schedule strength is now better than USC's, and will only get better with thier 2 toughest oponents still to come, USC's SOS will likely go down with thier relatively weak final 2 games. And if you look at how close OSU is in the polls to LSU point wise, a likely move up to 3rd (or possibly even 2nd) if they win out, in the polls will give them one less point in the BCS, enough to pass USC overall
