a playoff would be a joke for a season like this.... you have eight teams where anyone of them could go all the way. it just gives you more of an illusion that you have a national champion.

i'm not against it, but it'll be impossible to implement something that would still keep the bowls and not create extra games.

Pepsei- ummm.. Isn't that the same thing with any other sport? So the world cup, NCAA basketball tournament, NFL playoffs, I-AA football playoffs, etc etc are all dysfunctional? College football is the ONLY sport that does something like this. And of course the best team doesn't always win playoffs, but its the only fair way to do it rather than arbitrarily selecting the top 2 teams, especially this year when about 5-6 have legitimate claims to the NC game.

A playoff would be perfect for a season like this. 6 conference champions from the 6 major automatic bids and two at-large (including Hawaii if they win out). It would still leave someone sitting outside but I would feel a lot better about that than the pile of steaming crap we have right now. This year it is basically OSU vs. whoever the writers feel like having in the game. Stupid as hell.

Face it. There is no finding the absolute best team in a given season. Chances are that the best team on any given season has never made to that ultimate game to end all games that we call the national championship. The same is true for the NFL. The playoff system doesn't guarantee that the team that wins is the best. Neither does the BCS system, although I think the BCS makes a much better effort

i'm not against a play-off... it is just the same as arbitrarily selecting, but from a bigger sample. and of course, have a larger chance of an underdog going all the way.

but it is impossible to have one if it adds too many games at the end of the season or if it interferes with the bowls.

Why not use the bowls AS the playoff games?

you mean something like (sugar vs fiesta) vs (rose vs orange) = nc?

The problem is it is not a championship. It is not normal league play like every single sport in the entire world.

I still cannot understand why it isn't changed. My GF who is deeply ingrained in education said explained it best - "spidey, it's simply about money and exposure for the schools...the schools don't want it so it isn't going to happen."

Aside from the politics involved I don't see why it couldn't work.

Just in college sports? How about all of sports? :p - Still at least a month away from the bowl game also I assume? That's also pretty ridiculous. And everyone made a big fuss about the Colorado rockies having to wait 8 days to start their playoff games...or something like that. Any system where you can have two champions at the end of the year is a joke. The whole BCS system is ridiculous and I'm glad to hear everyone on TV speaking out about it now, pretty much all announcers/analysts are in agreement, the system sucks.

Yeah its pretty simple.

Keep the bowl system.

Top 8 teams play in the top 4 bowls.

Winner of the four games play each other.

Winner of those two games play for national title.

Have the Orange, Rose, Fiesta, and Sugar all play on Jan 1. Round 2 a week later, and championship game the week after that. Considering they keep moving the main bowls and title game back each year it wouldnt really extend the season.

Prestige for the bowl games would go way down, making them worth less. Everyone loses money. Not gonna happen. It's all about the money.

How so? The title game isnt even a major bowl anymore, its a fifth game. The prestiege isnt any less.

Mabe this could work...

A smaller playoffs system might be ok, but if you had a huge playoffs system, do you know what would happen? This season is EXACTLY why we shouldn't have a massive March Madness system because you can see what happens every week already?

When do people whine about playoffs? Things like 2004 season when Auburn went undefeated and really wanted to play USC. A playoffs system allows the top teams to all get a shot at the championship rather than a polling system from screwing everyone up.

I agree the top teams should play each other, but this can be done out of 8 teams, 4 bowl games and then a semifinals and finals round.

If you involve the top-25, all you get is THIS year's mess summed up in a playoffs series. That will just generate more madness.

No one except maybe Mike Leach, has ever seriously proposed anything more than a 8-12 team playoff.

My understanding is that all the conferences except the Pac-10 and Big Ten will agree to a playoff system.

Does that really matter? It's cause it would only harm the big teams. All these schools that always make it in the BCS top 25 would have a much harder time getting to the top. Everyone always talks about wanting to gives other schools a chance. This would make that possible. Playoffs are unforgiving and that's the way a sport should be...only after the conference games are done.

Set up the conferences...hell resign them if you have to. Make sure non conformists like Notre Dame get in a conference. The top teams automatically go on to the playoffs. You can have wildcards on top of that.

The final round of matches can be decided by the bowl games. Each bowl game can be represented by the battle for 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th.

No money lost. No history lost. No problem.

It is my understanding that a Pac-10 team plays EVERY team in their conference. How does one definitively determine the conference champion if every team does not play each other?

What does that have to do with a playoff system?
