BC4852 dropped the RAID array again

Ugh, fvcking hell. Dropped 5 of 6 disks this time. Luckily, the array is rebuilding after some work, as it only actually had 1 drive fail. 😕 Apparently this is an issue with the Broadcom controllers, after reading on the forums at 2cpu.com.

At this point, I would find it hard to recommend them, despite their cards having wonderful features.

i'm a noob when it comes to raid. i've setup a 3 hdds raid 5 array. is there a time limit on how long 2 disks will run if 1 fails?

The RAID 5 array will run until a second drive fails, and then all data will be lost.

so what if you have a 5 disk raid 5 array; does it allow 3 drives to fail before the array is gone?

If any two drives fail in a RAID 5 array, it is toast. If two drives fail, there isn't enough information to calculate the data, as only one (so to speak) has parity information. RAID 6 has two parity "drives" (it's rotational, not an actual drive, but for explanations sake), so it can handle two failures.

so in theory, the more disks you have in a raid 5 array, the less reliable the array becomes since there is more chance of 2 drives failing.

Yes, but that is like saying the more you leave the house, the more chance you have getting hit by a bus. And what few people understand, is that it often isn't the drive failing. But a PSU hiccuping, or a RAID controller faulting for a second, etc....

Fullmetal,

Are you using your Hitachi drives?

Yep. All 8 are Hitachi drives. I'm glad the RAID 0 didn't lose a drive. (everything is backed up, just would have been a pain in the ass)

Ya know, I wonder if it isn't the Hitachi drives...as I told you before, I have the same drives and they dropped out of my array as well...although I am having other problems with my controller card as you know, so I have no idea if my problem is the controller or the drives...
