Hi all
I have a mic setup that I use with BF2 - runs well. For BC2, I have never been able to have it work in either the demo or the full game. In fact, I have only ever heard others chatting in the demo.
I checked the settings, etc., and all looks fine. Ideas?

As a side, I notice a lot of people using 3rd party stuff like vent. I have never used something like that. Is it difficult to setup/use? I remember in BF2 the chat address for servers was often posted in the load screen - too fast to copy down, and I couldnt copy and paste it. How can you find all th echat addresses (or whatere they're called) for each server?

Anyway, thanks for the help.

And just wanted to mention I'm really impressed with the graphics for a new game - my 2 years old PC can play with everything maxed out at 1600 x 1200 85hz. Happy with it. What do people use to check the FPS? Maybe I shouldn't, Ill start getting critical, lol.

Vent used to be better than TS but the lastest version of TS has caught up to Vent.

I believe you have to pay to set-up a Vent server while TS is free, so that's why you'll find more people using TS.

And no, they are not compatible. I have both clients installed on my pc.

In the several games I have played of BC2 I have never heard anyone speak over voice chat.

You have to realize that if you use TS or Ventrilo, that the people in the game will not be able to hear you unless they are also on the same TS or ventrilo server.

I heard some people talking yesterday for the first time in a long time, but they were speaking Russian or something. And they were sniping, which would have been nice to know what they were yelling out. I think it works fine with the built-in chat, I just think no one really uses it.

I have only had 1 person actually answer me in a game and that is in 9 hours of game play...

It is non-existent in this game with is stupid...because that made BF2 one of the better times...the voice chat...

What's really sad is that with voice being sorta broken (but it works for some folks) sometimes and sometimes working, is that even if DICE gets it fixed people will have gotten into the habit of not even trying it, and it'll never reach the level of usage there was in BF2142. Consequences of having trouble at launch.

There is a setting in one of the .ini files that has a misspelled word (voipRecieve or similar), and some thought that correcting the spelling would make it work, but you really never know if the game code that references that setting also has it misspelled, so you don't know if you've broken it or fixed it (or neither).

FWIW, I think I heard one guy one time use in-game voice in the Beta, and have tried to speak in every squad I've gotten into in 4+ hours of game time in Retail, and haven't had a single indication that anyone heard me, and I've never heard anyone speak. Maybe one of these days I'll just have to get a buddy on and change all the settings one by one and see if we can't get it working.

TS & Vent are both free (client & server) for non-commercial, so if you've got your own webserver you can host either for your buddies at no cost. I'm experimenting with this now and having some serious delay problems, not sure why. You can also rent servers of each, with the going rate somewhere in the neighborhood of $.20-$.30/slot/month - pretty reasonable.

There's also Mumble/Murmur, which looks interesting given its use of in-game positional audio. They say that when you hear your squadmates speak over Mumble, you'll hear it in your speakers/headset coming from where the speaker is in-game in relation to you. Pretty cool. Unfortunately each game has to be enabled for it individually, and BF2/2142 and the CoD series are, BC2 (so far) is not.

Thanks a lot for the info guys!
My system gives no indication it is even enabling voice. In BF2 I would get the little speaker icon and a beep or something.
I heard 2 guys in the demo, thats it. And one was being a prick, so maybe a good side to no voice :)

A buddy says it's a server setting, but I can never see anything to that effect in any of the "server info" screens in the server browser or in-round. Has anyone else seen any indicators & can point the rest of us to where they are so that we know when we try in-game voice whether it's broken or just turned off?
