too bad they lost all the colonies, that would be a much more impresive list....

Sanctions were dropped BTW, welcome back.

I hear Iraq is considering subsidizing some of their exports to compete on the open market, any thoughts on this Andy?

Hi,

I stuck the new article link at the bottom of my first post thanks. I don't know whether you read my "EDIT" at the bottom of my previous post. Just a helpful pointer to avoid posts on the subject.

Cheers,

Andy

I wonder where you're going with that..... ;)

Well, given the state they're in at the moment (and that I don't know any details) I'll let them off with it - as measured on the "Andy-fairtrade-o-meter!"

Cheers,

Andy

Let them sell their oil outside of OPEC.

This is probably the best news for the people of Iraq for a long time, even freedom matters little if you starve to death.

There is no valid reason to retain sanctions on Iraq. The U.N. is only about a month late in this, not bad for a commitee of commitees, eh? However, it's not a clear-cut case of doing what's right...
The changes to earlier drafts included an expansion of the role of the UN
Say it isn't greed.
The resolution asked UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to appoint a special representative to help set up an interim Iraqi government
Tell me it's not about power.
people are getting a confused message - the end of sanctions means that Iraqis can get income through oil revenues, but the money will be spent on their behalf by foreigners.
LOL, ugh the tickling hurts.

The UN pulled tens of millions in the food for oil program. The concessions that were made is that France, Germany, and Russia get all the debt Saddam owed them, so of course it was about money for them as usual.

At least it is for their benefit, instead of at their expense as it has been for decades.

Russia also offered to write off $8B of Iraq debt accumulated under Saddam in exchange to foreign creditors writing off $8B of Soviet Debt accumulated under USSR.
No takers, of course. People think that Iraq should be off the hook for debts accumulated under previous regime, but not Russia for debts it inherited from USSR's communist regime.
