I watched this on MSNBC last night. The BBC aired a documentary of this, and included the actual audio tapes. It's amazing that Nixon got away with what he did without be held for treason. But Lyndon was worried about the illegal wiretapping he did so he didn't pursue. The video is worth watching if you have time.

Very disgusting. Nixon has become an even bigger stain on American history than before.

Yes I would call it treason.

The war would of ended but went on for 5 more years and 17,000 more American casualties.

Shame shame shame

Wow, Nixon was even a bigger piece of shit than I thought. And that's saying something.

I wonder how the die hard Nixon supporters (but...but..CHINA!) can reconcile with this news. They're probably still wrestling with Nixon's personal desire to outlaw all handguns.

PrinterBandit....link? Never heard that before, educate me.

The important thing is that the weapons contractors made a mint no matter how the chips landed in the war. Just like with Iraq in modern times. :)

The thing is these tapes of LBJ talking to Everett Dirksen about Nixon's sabotage of Vietnam peace talks have been released for quite a while

I've heard a talk show host talking about these tapes every once in a while since the middle of 2012.

It's a shame that BBC news reports on these tapes before any U.S. news media does.

This is the first I have heard of it but where the hell is the US media in ALL of this with the exception the one snipit on the RM show.

By all accounts we were on the verge of the end of the war and one man in his zeal for power decided it was ok to let 17000 more americans die,

I am just amazed there is no further outrage...

I don't understand it either, as Nixon committed serious treason. I don't understand why all news outlets are not talking about this. However, it doesn't surprise me people are apathetic to this. No one has held Bush or Cheney accountable for their war crimes and they are still alive and kicking.

The same multinationals that give us Big Macs and Diet Vanilla Cherry Coke are the ones who own the media. No surprise the media ends up vanilla as well.

LBJ committed treason with the Gulf of Tonkin incident and for escalating the Vietnam war.

Pushing for the Civil Rights Act of 1964,all the other race privileges legislation, and the Great Society was also treasonous.

Disturbing revelation to be sure.

Side note: is her reporting always that bad? I heard you the first time you said the sentence, no need to repeat it five times. Makes me wonder if we've had so many problems with illegal wiretapping that everyone just really wanted it to be legal so now it is....

As opposed to the one man who sent in combat troops, widely expanded the war and instituted the draft? The Vietnam war management at the top was a huge stain on America by both the LBJ and Nixon administrations

I think her reporting is pretty good. She is geared towards a younger audience so I think you have to expect a lot of viewers aren't going to have all the background. In her reporting she sort of presents things like a civics teacher to make sure people understand whatever the point of the story is. It can seem a little dumbed down if you know the facts but the subject matter is usually solid (like this story)

Unfortunately a lot of people just aren't that smart, nor do many people have any real history knowledge. So she does go out of her way to give a huge lead in (to educate) and sometimes that can get boring.. I start thinking "alright already, get to the point". But she is trying to make sure folks do understand the big picture.

Exterous this is not about republicans or democrats or the build up to the vietnam war the story here is about one man sabotaging what would of been an end to the Vietnam war so he could get elected.

Shocking, American presidents cheats, lies, steals, and murders...who would da thunk!

I'm not a crook. Richard M. Nixon

When the Preside3nt does it, that means that it's not illegal. Richard M. Nixon

Politics would be a helluva good business if it weren't for the goddamned people. Richard M. Nixon

Read my lips, no new taxes. George H. W. Bush

Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent. George W. Bush

We have sources that tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders to use chemical weapons -- the very weapons the dictator tells us he does not have. George W. Bush

I'll speak of what's more shocking, iGas - how quiet our "right" leaning members are at this time....

Nixon was a bigger bastard than anyone expected.
He should be posthumously tried for treason.

Yeah, fat chance of that happening, though...

BBC article for those that don't want to watch. Illegal wiretap or not, he should have be called out. To allow someone like that to be president is almost treason in itself.

Don't you know that the Vietnam War is sooo yesterday.

Kind of like Reagan interfering with Carter's Iranian Hostage negotiations.

well if you include the shens in Fl. in 2000 or the shens in Ohio in 2004....

One could make quite an entertaining "conspiracy theory"

It would have been great if Presidents respected the precedent of recording White House phone calls. Unfortunately Watergate sunk that.. can't really blame them for not wanting to do it now.
