This was being discussed in the (now buried) BB T-day threads. I wanted to post a followup for those discussing the DVD players.

I got one of the $69 Nikkai 800a models. It turns out that this model is a decent deal. I've found no info anywhere on the web for this and the box/manual don't really say anything on it (or just barely). This model WILL read DVD's, CDR's, CDRW's, VCDs, and play MP3s (I tested the media variations last night). No real bobbles, I even tested using the free Kenwood test DVD that was posted awhile back. The only "bad" thing about the model is no component outputs (RCA, digital, and SVHS only).

So, if this model is still available at BB, it could be considered a warm deal (by some). Now if someone could just find some hacks for it ;)

If you have a tv with component intputs you really shouldn't be buying a $69.00 dvd player anyways. That is like putting arco gas in a ferarri.

Areas that did not get the Nikkai model instead got the Shinsonic DVD-100/DVD-100A. It comes with Component Outputs and will play anything except SVCD (although a firmware change can add it, but you'll lose the Kodak Picture CD Capability).

The Shinsonic's are already on CLEARANCE at Best Buy for $79.50! If you find an Open Box one, it will be cheaper. :)

Nikkai is a piece of $..t imho. I got it too. The remote is horribly inresponsive, and after it hang up trying to play the 2nd dvd in the starwars (showed a garbled screen) I brought it back to BB and got Mintek for 89.99 which I've been absolutely happy with so far.

Another nice one is the Daewoo at Sams for 99 -- can play any region dvd, and plays svcd's etc. very nicely.
