BB BFG Ti4200 with defective ram

I got the BB BFG Ti4200 on the 29th. I installed the latest 40.72 driver from nvidia and tried to run 3Dmark2001. The benchmark would sometime display white polygons and then quits to the desktop.

It's obvious that this is a memory related problem, so I went to BB to do an exchange. The tech person said he wanted to test the card. So he took the card and ran the DX8.1 test (the one with spining cubes and the bouncing cubes). Only idiot would do that because I already told him that the card faults with a much higher complex scene (large texture memory). So he then went ahead and loaded up DOS (yes he loaded dos on his computer) he whipped out his trusty 3.5in disk with his "professional" diagnostic program (I think its the dell diagnostic program). He would than run some of the very basic GPU and memory function (such as display different colors and read and write to the memory). After the card was deamed "functional" he the told me there is nothing wrong with the card and nothing he can do about it.

I told him that he doesn't know $hit about testing video card, and he said he has a A+ certification and has been working as a technitian for 12 years (like that has anything to do with anything). I had nothing to say to him and walked out the BB (This is the one in Ann Arbor)

I called the BFG tech support. The guy I talk to knows exactly what I am talking about, he is very well versed in the video card technology and after I described to him what happend on my machine, he immitiately said the memory subsystem has problems. He was very nice and offered to ship the replacement card out over night (He has already informed their lab and will strip the card down to look for problems).

So the moral of the story is BB technitian knows $hit about anything and BFG tech support is very good, and if BFG is any improvement over visiontek they have a bright future ahead of them.

So how is your BFG Ti4200 doing?

I wouldn't say that the BFG cards are bad its just I had a bad sample and if BFG would take all card failer serioulsy then through continous improvement they would have better products. I am mad at the BB tech not at BFG (I will get my replacement card on Tuesday! FedEX over night!). BFG tech support rulz! :)

lol i know what you mean

i took my system in (trying to get the first ati9700pro to work) after working all night to get the card working right.i thought it was a bad card but since it was my first bad card...
so i took it to my local bestbuy
they told me two hours to install it (they tried for two days)
then told me my system was not capable of running it, even said they were members of anandtech, that only nvidia video cards are guarenteed to work, could they sell me a ti4200.

i took back that card, grabbed another and loaded it up.
in 30 minutes i was back with computer in hand to show the A+ certified jerk that it was a bad card not my system as he stated(he too threw it up in my face that he was a+ certified and had been working on computers x amount of years, and that i was a fool for buying ati.

he was very nice and said glad to see you got it working:Q

i learned a valuable lesson that day.

What were their AnandTech usernames so we can rip them a new one?

lol they never said but i bet you could have knocked me over with a feather at that point

i was shocked, not only was it the first time i had heard anandtech mentioned (other than the web) but that it was in this fashion...

they also mentioned rage3d.

i am looking to get a+ certified but not to be like that.

i love working on computers and learning more about them.

General rule of thumb -- if you look for technicians based on their certification you're in for a big disappointment. Think about car mechanics; they have tons of certifications for those mecahnics working at your local Shell but they might very well be the scum of the earth... (I had a bad experience with a car mechanic who was "certified" and "had been working with cars for XYZ years" etc)

Two thumbs up for BFG's technical support!

You are surprised that Best Buy tech support didn't have a clue? Where have you been? Hehe, that's just the way it is at large-scale stores like that. There aren't enough good techies to go around.

*sigh*
I used to be a BB tech. and I feel for you. I was one of the techs who WASN'T A+ certified, yet that's why most of the dept. (except my supervisor who was the 'head geek' before I showed up) would come to me when they couldn't get past the 'A+ canned procedures' as I call them. Certifications are nice and all, but nothing beats hand-on experience IMO. I've learned that when someone says "I'm A+ certified", the majority of the time they have no f'in clue what they are doing...I have too many stories about that =)

I'm glad you got your issue resolved and although not convenient, you got to see what kind of Tech Support BFG provides.

...and you should really get their Anandtech tags. I'd love to see them get embarrassed =) (I'm sadistic like that though)

Are you getting a specific file named during the BSOD?
(I know this isn't a tech. support forum, but thought I might help quickly)
Wouldn't be Nv4_disp.dll would it?

It happenes when Im playing Command and Conquer Renegade. I will start to play and any amount of time: 20min, 1 hour, 5 hours and I will get this blue screen error. Iam not able to read the screen because the computer would reboot, but from what I did see its say something about a memory dump. Is there a log on windows that I can fully read this problem. Also I had a Duron @1ghz and I never got this problem, and when I upgraded to a Xp1600+ I started to notice this. I also formated my drive and reinstalled windows when I upgraded to the 1600+, and Im not overclocking. Sorry to jack this thread.

Heh, most of the employees at Best Buy dont know their head from their a$$. I heard this one salesman saying, 'Yes, LCD are better for PC's because they are faster." Best Buy only cares about your money, not your satsifaction.
