Baybus or Rheobus?

What is the difference between a baybus and a rheobus? Yes, a newbie question, but I can't spot the difference.

A baybus uses switches, typically two or three way (on/off or on/half/off) and a rheobus uses a rheostat to control voltage so there are an infinite number of choices between 0 and 12 volts.

If you want to go through the trouble of making your own or buying one of the two, I highly highly highly recomend going with a rheobus. I mad my own after having a self-made baybus, and the difference in phenomenal. 12v to 7v is nice and all, but the ability to tweak the speed of the fans not only adjusts the overall loudness of them, but the quality of the sound emitted (ie, whining or pulsing, or slightly clicky sounds of the fans). The options are soooooo much better with a rheobus, of course it costs more.

if you do build your own or buy, make sure the rheostats can handle the fans. I made my own 4 port rheobus w/ led/knob mod. it's nice, but I can't use it for my tornado. the rheostats i was able to find can only handle up to 3 watts.

but yea, svc has a nice 4 port rheobus for 30 bucks, looks just like mine but the knobs are smaller.

Well, I don't personally care about noise, so I truly have no need for a rheobus or baybus. I also lack an etching tank to make circuit boards.

I have a PCmods rheobus I got from plycon.com it handles a ton o watts and looks very nice. But I'd look into SVC as $30 is cheap make sure the watts are ok though or else it is a waste! My rheobus was $50 🙁 and now I am gonna spend $5 more for blue annodized knobs for that extra touch.

btw go all the way and get the rheobus as a matter of sound that was mentioned before.

The one SVC is seling will not be available till mid-december. But it looks darn good! I love how each of the 4 channels will support up to 18 watts. That means we can use it with fans like that Tornado.

This is a good solution. Can control up to 6 fans. Has high, low and off settings. But you can adjust the low setting via the potentiometer, therefore making it closer to the speed you prefer.

This is an interesting solution, but it controls just one fan. It has other valuable uses like front usb 2.0, firewire and 3 temp monitors. The front panel that shows the temp/fan speed is back lighted (green). Very easy to install btw. Only bad thing is the temp sensor for the cpu isn't thin enough to fit under the cpu.

I have that 6 port baybus now (and I like it) but I think I'd prefer that new one from Vantec. That variable speed control and support for faster fans sets it off from any others I've seen. One will be in my system as soon as they are available. 😀
