I have a two day interview coming up in Oakland. On my second interview day (its a Sunday) I need to get on a red eye flight for another interview in NYC for Monday morning. Flights out of Oakland's airport are lacking so I'm considering flying in and out of SFO. Is a rental car necessary, and about how long of a commute does it take getting and from to Oakland? I figure I have about a 3 hour cushion for commuting.

Yes, you will need a rental car. Unless the place in Oakland is close to a BART station then you can take that to SFO.

fly from Oakland to SFO

What time is your red eye flight? BART operates till around midnight, and that would be much easier and painless than driving a rental car.

I take it BART is a quick reliable rail system. I'll look into it. Thanks.

yes, but as people have mentioned, it only runs until midnight or so, so make sure you are where you need to be by then.

Jetblue has a 9:30pm flight from Oakland to JFK that gets in at 6am. I'd take them over United or American out of SFO. Sounds like loads of fun, two day interview, redeye flight and another interview:Q

Yep, Fly JetBlue and the redeye.

Assume your flight will be in at 5:30am though as JetBlue redeye flights are usually early. Call your NY hotel and ensure you can get early check in and take a nap before your interview.

I would avoid Oakland Bart stations late in the dark especially if I were alone and I was a visitor to the area. I have been living in the SF Bay Area for 10 years now and still avoid Oakland in the night (the only areas where I would go in the night are Oakland hills and OAK airport area)

<< currently live ~5 min from OAK Airport in the city of Alameda.

Commute from Oakland to SFO would be ~45 min max during off-peak hours. Add another 30 min to drop rental car at SFO. I would still fly out of OAK though

OAK can't fly as far because they have shorter runways. I tried to take OAK to Hawaii once and they stopped at SFO to gas up. FYI
