It sucks..but it all depends on time of day. Leave very early or wait until late morning.

Darby, it can get pretty bad but it's not as bad as doing a north on 405 commute in the mornings up here.

I commute from San Francisco (Glen Park) to Menlo Park on the 101 every day, 31 miles each way.
You can cut a good chunk of commute time (around 15-20 minutes each way) if you can arrange your schedule so that you arrive at 10am instead of 9am and leave at 6pm or later instead of 5pm. That 30-40 minutes a day really adds up.
Oh, and the Friday commute back up to the city via 101 ALWAYS sucks because of all the people going up there for the evening. I don't think I've been able to leave work at the normal time and get home in less than an hour and a half in the past 2-3 months. If you have Friday plans, definitely leave early if it's at all possible.
If you're coming from the west side of the city, 280 is an option but it is 7 miles longer each way (I used to take that when I lived over in the Sunset and carpooled with my housemate to Mountain View). The only benefit is that you're usually always moving on 280, unlike the stop and go on 101. What this means is that 280 doesn't make much of a difference unless you'll be working somewhere near it.

My friend works a 7-4 shift and her commute is usually very quick and painless. You could probably get away with shifting that a half hour later, but any more than that and you'd be hitting prime traffic hours.
As for the suggestion of taking El Camino all the way down, the first day it rains here in the fall (after a completely dry four months of summer), people are dullards who forgot how to drive in the rain which means El Camino really IS faster than 101/280. Last time that happened two years ago, it took me 2.5 hours to get to work. Needless to say, last year I worked from home on that first day of rain.
