Do a repair install. Boot your XP CD, wait for the first input screen where repair console is offered. You don't need that, press enter. Now accept to the terms (F8). On the next screen your existing XP should be recognized (if not, then you are out of luck). Don't press enter (would start a fresh install), press 'R' instead (the word 'repair' should be visible in the bottom line of the screen). Watch and wait. Could lose nothing trying. If HDD is on SATA, press F6 when indicated in the bottom line of the installer screen (right after the install cd boots) and later put the SATA driver disk into the FDD when asked for.
