Just bought the mini-series and Season 1 box set and watched them both over two days.

First time in a while I've seen GOOD sci-fi instead of crap or mediocrity at best. Too bad I don't have cable so I can watch season 2 right now :(

That is all.

No need to compare 1 and 2, bsg overall is just 99999999999999x better than any scifi series created in the last decade.

Christ, people, don't go comparing off seasons, now, LOL! If it weren't for the way Season 1 went, season 2 wouldn't have gone the way it has so far!

In any case, the new BSG rocks, definitely *far* superior to the original :)

That's a given. The first one was a massive cheese-fest.

You know, the biggest thing I'm glad for is that there's no sign of that goddamn robot dog and we only *rarely* see that damn kid :)

Sci-fi use to be episodic and would be able to solve any problem in 45 minutes. It did not really matter what order you watched the shows. Babylon 5 changed that with having a five-year plan for the story line.
I still like Farscape better then BDG.

The episodic formula where every problem was done in 45 minutes is *exactly* what made shows like Star Trek's last few incarnations mediocre. BSG's storytelling method is *very* context-sensitive, the order in which you watch episodes matters and developments to characters in one episode actually stick for more than just that episode.

In terms of their storytelling method, BSG has far more in commong with Buffy the Vampire Slayer than with Star Trek, a fact which has helped BSG to become a *vastly* superior show.

Yeah, but unfortunately episodic storylines are easier to use for reruns. That's why the networks are clogging up the airwaves with single-eps fare that don't have too much character development, etc. eg. CSI, Law and Order, etc. :|

I know the last season of B5 was less than stellar. Seasons 1-4 were the show. I thought i read someplace that they didn't know if they were gonna be renewed for that last season.

I think i would take B5 over BSG any day of the week.

You've *got* to be kidding. Enterprise *sucked*. The cast was great, the writing was AWFUL. 3rd season improved it and 4th was pretty good, but it never reached the level of BSG.

oooh, man. That robot dog, that stupid annoying loud robot dog... HATED that.

Some other small things they improved in the new series... things break, they have to worry about food, water and fuel. The cylons don't load 3 humanoid robots into a fighter ship to fly it - they just build the brain into the ship. Makes sense. Just makes it easier to keep up the WSOD.

LOL, so true! I always wondered why in the hell they needed THREE robots to fly one damn ship, hehe :) I also like that the new Galactica actually has the *feel* of a military ship. It's not all carpeted and comfy and plush like the old one. I like that they've got their homages to the old series--occasional clips of the theme music, using the old style Vipers, etc. I love the way they develop the characters, especially the Cylons. THe fact that the Cylons are so intensely religious, completely wrapped up in "God's plan" is just awesome.

Another problem with quality shows today is that they have less time to tell the story. In 1966, 50 minutes for an hour long show and 25 minutes for a half hour. Today's shows have less than 45 minutes and less than 20 minutes.

Also the sets on the show look like movie-caliber design. Granted, they got a pretty good budget for the mini-series, and the sets carried over from that, but it LOOKS like the interior of a military space ship. By far better than Star Trek sets (movie or tv show), Farscape and Babylon 5. Now, I loved B5, but they had a shoe-string budget compared to BSG.
