Battlestar Galactica: Old vs. New

I've been watching the 1978 series on Netflix for the past week and I like it much better than the newer version, which I stopped watching after like 6 episodes. I like the old Starbuck much better than the female version. I also wish the newer version didn't use CGI cylons, unlike the old version. Finally, the characters, even the bad ones are far more likeable than in the newer version. Worse, some of the heroes in the newer version are to emo to be liked. My favorite character of the baddies is Lucifer.

I watched the first couple eps of 1978 BSG and turned it off. the cheese level was insane; I found it to be pretty much unwatchable.

You thought it was cheesey and still tolerated the cheap CGI-based Cylons? I will admit that the 1978 BSG was cheesey but that is to be expected. IT IS from 1978. Something more recent should be of higher quality, don't you think?
 
I've seen all of both series. The new one is better. I still love the theme music from the old series though.
 
I saw most of the old series, back then we only had 1 TV so it was always a fight with my dad over what shows would be seen....and he didn't like Science Fiction at all. :laugh:

Anyway, the old series was very good at the time and very different than the new series. The difference is like the difference between the Original Star Trek and ST:TNG. More Theatrical vs more Realistic.

If you wannt to see something way more Campy, watch Space 1999. It too was a great show at the time, but when I saw an episode 10 years after it first Aired I couldn't believe how bizarre it was. :laugh: It was almost as if the Cast spent all their Free Time at a Disco listneing to KC and the Sunshine Band and we know how all that turned out.

It's a TELEVISION show with a TELEVISION budget, not a MOVIE with a MOVIE sized budget for each episode.

Also, the series really picks up by the end of season 1. I'd suggest you keep watching it. If you aren't getting interested by then, just stop...and go figure out what's wrong with your brain. 😛

Honestly, though...BSG original was terrible compared to the new one. You must just have bad taste.

Edit: Starbuck starts off as nothing special in the new series, but by the end she's definitely one of the most important characters (and a much better character overall). The characters/actors in the new show are, overall, so much better than the original. Ugh.

Where I grow up, BSG characters are far from "emo". If anything, they're acting fairly realistically. I don't see them wearing all black, having strange hair cuts, wearing lots of makeup, and cutting themselves while the Cylons just kill them.

You must live in some sort of fantasy land where emo people = normal people.

I never found the cgi cylons to look especially bad or cheap, especially given how infrequently the toasters were even used and how tight the show budget must have been.

btw, if anyone wants to see cheesy tv, watch some of the old Land of the Lost episodes. Some network had a marathon yesterday of LotL. It was horridly cheesy.

I grew up with the 70s version, and my avatar screen name is a direct reference to my being a fan of the original.

I thought the actors from the original were better and the soundtrack superior. I also kind of preferred the old shiny Cylons, Raiders, Basestars, etc. I know the the old colonial uniforms were 70s fabulous, but they worked.

Unfortunately, the premise of the original show never quite matched the campy sci-fi plotlines of the episodes.

I thought the new Battlestar Galactica got off to a good start in terms of plotlines, but I quickly grew bored with it...took itself a bit too seriously. I also wish they retained more of the art direction of the original. They new CGI Cylons never worked for me...neither did the whole organic machine Raiders.

And I will never forgive them for making Starbuck a woman.

Heh, try watching some of the early decades of Doctor Who....
 
All the proof anyone needs that the old BSG was better than the new BSG is that the new BSG was only really good when it was copying the old BSG. Once it got away from that (about the season 2 - season 3 cusp), then the show started to fall apart.

Yeah, the old BSG is hardly any more cheesy than any other TV series from the 70s.
 
The biggest bother I had with the new version is when they'd show some technology they had, that seemed so 20th century, even though they were capable of traveling light speed through space. "We've finished the light speed jump, sir......shall I call Commander Adama on this rotary dial telephone??" 😉

Oh yeah, and imho, the 70's version was much more baby-heavy. Jane Seymour, FTW!! :thumbsup:

Yeah, I recently rented some of the first season of Space: 1999 from Netfix and found it unwatchable.

 
The old series was fun and I wish they'd completed the Starbuck storyline, but seriously that series was a joke. I mean in the very next episode after their entire civilization was destroyed THEY WENT TO A CASINO PLANET AND FORGOT ABOUT ALL THEIR TROUBLES!

The old BSG was heavily religious-themed (Glen Larson is a devout Mormon), and this storyline appears to copy aspects of the Hebrew exodus from Egypt.
